alcohol not trigger?
Feb 15th, 2010 at 9:59am

Anyone drink and its not a trigger. I only drink whiskey never beer only jim beam usually about twice a month. Have had attacks when drinking but no more often than when not drinking, maybe even less often. Suffer one attack between 8pm to 2am about 5days a week usually kip 5-7 3 times and 8-10 the other two lasting between 45 min to 70 min. New to site so have stopped drinking as of a week ago. just curious if the alcohol is causing me to have more often attacks and more severe even if the attacks arent directly related to the consumption. anyone one with some info on it would be great. Not drinkin anymore regardless. just wondering if there is relief in store from stopping.

I don't remember responding to you; so welcome to the madhouse. I just wish this horror wasn't the reason. Anyway..

I was 23 when my CH began in 1969 and although not an every day drinker, I had my fair share at times. Alcohol was never a trigger for me and way back then and now, I had no trouble with it.

My CH ended for no apparent reason in 1991 when I was 45 and I get a less than 5 second zinger once a year. I have no complaints.

The only thing different at the time was that I began drinking very strong coffee all day long. I doubt coffee is the reason for me but others here swear by caffeine. Most say alcohol is a trigger but there are some that aren't affected.

It can't hurt to curtail the booze but then that's rarely any fun. I guess the only thing to do is experiment but then chers aren't stupid....well most of us anyway  Roll Eyes and the idea of dealing with hits to prove a point......I dunno.

Good luck in any event.

Charlie

I've heard it both ways.  For some it appears to not be a trigger.  For others a consistent trigger.

Unfortunately in my case it's a near instant trigger.  Used to enjoy a beer or two while I cooked, but now just a few sips triggers some nasty attacks.

Be thankful that you appear to be one of the lucky ones.

Would the owner of the propane torch, egg beater, pipe expander and vise grips please claim these items. They're lodged in my head and I need the space.

I've been chronic for 23 yrs. now.  Alcohol has never been a trigger for me and after 12 yrs. of talking to many chronics around this site, I am not alone.

That said.  MOST episodics have alcohol as a very definite trigger and I would not reccommend drinking anything...while in cycle.
Alcohol is alcohol and I scratch my head in disbelief in some who say they can drink bourbon, but not beer.  Or they can drink beer but not wine.  Or, or or.  If you are episodic.  Don't drink anything with alcohol in it.

my 2cents.  Actually that is probably worth more than that but we're in a recession ya know.  Grin

I have no problem with alcohol when not "in season", but when the beast is visiting, it's a big-time guaranteed trigger!

For a few of us, serious exercise or standing barefoot on something like a concrete floor have been known to help. Can't hurt so long as you use a broom now and then. Anything that requires our ridiculous circulatory system to move around blood (it's in short supply) is the idea here.

God must have farmed out work on this part of our fraglie being to a local government contractor. Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Alcohol is a trigger for me about 2/3 of the time. Before I even knew what was going on and had never heard of cluster headaches, I began to link them to my beer drinking. Changed brands and it seemed to work, at least for a time. I finally came to the unhappy conclusion that the alcohol was causing them. If I drink at all anymore it's a gamble. The headaches I get when drinking are intense so it's a long time between beers. Just isn't worth it even as much as I like a tall cold one. Sure would like a beer!!

Don't even want to think about alchohol when in cycle and not because I drank and got a killer. Just doesn't sound good to me for some reason.

Hi Travisk,

To me, drinking alcohol during a cycle is like playing Russian roulette with 6 bullets in the barrel... Tongue

I just love having a drink but whenever I am in cycle, I become an instant monk.  And boy do I get scared when I have my first drink after my cycle ends...

Take care!

I once admitted publicly that I can drink what I like, when I like, subject only to supply but after the hate-mail I got in return I'm never going to say it again.

Cheers and beers,

Anonymous.

It's always a chance I take every time I have a drink.  When the beast is visiting and I am getting slammed hard everyday, I won't even consider it.  The other night, I had one beer (I swear, it was ONE) and the beast woke me up, but I was able to ignore and go back to sleep.  Beer and red wine seems to be the alcohol that will trigger a ch in me.  I can drink vodka and and be ok.  Everyone is different, YMMV.

If you choose to take the risk and drink, be prepared by having 02 or other tools to fight the beast nearby.

Cheers!

Im episodic, slowly becoming chronic ( I E my attacks are becomming longer, and my time off is shortening)  I first became aware of the problem when I was in my teens due to alcohol.  Drinking even a few mouthfulls of beer (especially dark) can actually bring me into season, and while in season will absolutely cause an attack.  I have found these to be guaranteed triggers: Dark liqours, red wine, chocolate or high dose of sugar, and any kind of smoke.  I can sometimes get away with very light beer, or even a clear wine or liqour from time to time... but its just not worth the risk.
Hope that doesnt depress anyone, but lets face it, its about the most depressing condition around.  The best thing to do is be proud of the fact that you are brave enough for today, and for what you know is comming tomorrow.
