No big changes in what we know about kudzu recently.

A study was published in 2009 by Dr. Sewell that was consistent with what people found here - many people with clusters showed good or very good response to kudzu. I have spoken with people that used it for several cycles with good results, some who saw it's effectiveness fade with time (as many medicines can do in clusters).

Quote:
Response of cluster headache to kudzu.

Headache. 2009 Jan;49(1):98-105.
Sewell RA.

VA Connecticut Healthcare, Yale University School of Medicine, Psychiatry, West Haven, CT 06516, USA.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the self-treatment of cluster headache with kudzu. BACKGROUND: Many cluster headache patients take over-the-counter (OTC) kudzu extract in the belief that it helps their cluster attacks. Kudzu's actual efficacy has not been studied. METHODS: A database of cluster headache patients was questioned about their use of various alternative remedies to treat their cluster headache. Of 235 patients identified, 16 had used kudzu, consented to interviews, and provided medical records. RESULTS: In total, 11 (69%) experienced decreased intensity of attacks, 9 (56%) decreased frequency, and 5 (31%) decreased duration, with minimal side effects. CONCLUSION: Anecdotal evidence suggests that a component in OTC products labeled as kudzu may prove useful in managing cluster headache. This hypothesis should be tested with a randomized clinical trial.

In one thread here, we had far more than 16 people that tried it, and the response rate was somewhat higher, but basically consistent with Dr. Sewell's survey.

As far as what is popular among patients or with doctors - that is part science and effectiveness, but is also affected by other factors (economics, novelty, ideology, etc).

The outer boundary of what we currently believe is feasible is far short of what we actually must do.

I have found it to be much more effective than Verap at 760mg and Lithium at ? and without all the side effects, some of which I still deal with after 4 years.  I inadvertantly ran out of kudzu about a week and a half ago and had to run on half dosages until I could get a new supply in, and I promise you I will NEVER let that happen again.

Yes, I tried it several years back when everyone on the board was hyping it up. It never worked for me. I'd also be interested in others sharing dosing methods. Maybe I wasn't taking enough and at proper intervals?

I'm using Nature's Way 613mg 2 capsules X 3.  I started out using a bit less and upped the dosage little by little to their recommended daily dosage (not a CH dosage, for normal use).  Sometimes when getting hit hard I will add a 4th dose before bed.

I have the best results when I take them with food.  I don't get any stomach upset or anything like that, but sometimes I'll get gas and food helps prevent that for some reason.

Also, I use it all the time because I'm chronic.  If I was episodic I would start it at the first sign a cycle MIGHT be starting and continue it until I knew for sure it was dead and gone.  It won't hurt to take it with or without CH.  For diabetics it will help to level out sugar levels (if you are behaving on your diet)  It is not a replacement for diabetes meds!!!  Let me be very clear on that!

I'll try to get back to you later with a link for the place I get mine.  I've promised it to another on a PM as well, but will have to do it later tonight.

I'm back with the source I promised.

I use Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register; There are other good suppliers out there, but the reason I have used them now for a couple of years is the extraordinary service we get from them.  The will expedite an order when they know I am low.  The usually fill an order the day we call it in, but at least by the next day and they use UPS or the US Mule Priority Mail if the order is small, so you will get your order promptly.  One time Linda, my wife, called the order in just a little before time for their shipments to be picked up and they rushed it and got it out on that day's truck because they knew I was needing it right away.  That has earned my loyalty.

They will also match prices of competitors online if you can give them a quote.

Finally, if you do place an order with them please tell them I referred you.  The reason for that is that I have talked with some of them about the use of Kudzu for CH and have told them I will be referring people from OUCH and CH.com to them.  It always helps to get the word out about us in any way we can.  They have been extremely loyal to me to help me in my need and I want to show the same back to them.

Any questions that I can help with feel free to yell.  Free advice is worth every penny you pay for it! Grin
