People will come.
Apr 5th, 2010 at 10:28am

Ray, people will come Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. Of course, we won't mind if you look around, you'll say. It's only $20 per person. They'll pass over the money without... See More even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack.

And they'll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces.

People will come Ray. The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

I watched again just a week ago - and I'm not big into movies. This one is different.

I love that speech.  No one but James Earl Jones would ever be able to pull that off.

It's right up there on my list too.

It's an old fashioned film. It's full of dialog rather than action. It reminds me of old movies from TCM. A damned good piece of work.

The part where Ray has a catch with his dad (at the end) gets me every time.

Thursday's my day off and there are a couple day games in July and August.  I was looking at taking the time to head down to the stadium ticket office and hang out around the area.  Usually I do it sooner but work's been hectic and here the new boss scheduled a meeting then.  Blah blah blah crap.  I have to start off with some kind of impression I guess.

The strong will of tradition playing hookey to show up at a day game is still ingrained.  This will have to be clever.   Wink

It's one game, Jacks. They have 161 more to play.

That's what I've been telling myself about the Brewers today. Grin

One of my all time favorite movies!

It's been awhile.  I gotta watch it again!

MLB on the other hand, probably not - and I am the daughter of a old time MLB pitcher!  Sorry Daddy.

Along with Annie Savoy...that's THE classic baseball soliliquy....and by the greatest...thanks Brew.

At the start of the season, I am reminded of several favorite quotes:

"With those who don't give a damn about baseball, I can only sympathize. I do not resent them. I am even willing to concede that many of them are physically clean, good to their mothers and in favor of world peace. But while the game is on, I can't think of anything to say to them. "
Art Hill in I Don't Care If I Never Come Back

"Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona." -George F. Will

Best,

Jon
