It's been raining on and off today since I came home from work. This is some kind of wildflower springing up in my yard, so I grabbed a snapshot of one using a snoot on my flash - spot metered.

I appreciate the nice comments, but I can't take credit for the beauty - I just took a picture of it!

Luinda, most of the time I just close my eyes and slowly turn in a circle while pressing the button.

This time I held a full roll of paper towels in front of my flash to create a spotlight. The whole flower in this one is about the size of a quarter.

Then, if you want the light to be soft, you hang a single layer of tissue on the end of the roll. (If you use a roll of toilet paper instead of paper towels, you have both handy

)

The tube lets light hit the flower while the fat part of the roll blocks the rest of the light.
