Makes me WANT to pay TAXES....
May 4th, 2010 at 1:57pm

Sharon Jasper has spent 57 of her 58 years dedicated to one cause and one cause only, and has nothing to show for her dedicated servitude ...

She has lived in Section 8 housing all but 1 of her 58 years.  It was a legacy passed down from her parents who moved into Section 8 housing in 1949 when she was six months old.  She has passed the legacy down to her children, but fears they may have to get jobs to pay for the utilities and deposits.

She laments about her one year hiatus from the comfort of her Section 8 nirvana, 'I tried it for a year -- you know, working and all.  It's not anything I would want to go through again, or wish on anyone in my family, but I am damn proud of that year.'

Sharon was moved out of her St. Bernard housing project after hurricane Katrina and into a new, yet albeit, substandard quarterage.  As can be noted from the above photo of her new Section 8 home, it is repugnant and not suitable for someone of Sharon Jasper's seniority status in the system.  'Don't be fooled by them hardwood floors,' says Sharon .

'They told me they were putting in scraped wood floors cause it was more expensive and elegant, but I am not a fool -- that was just a way to make me take scratched up wood because I am black.  The 60 inch HD TV?  It may look nice but it is not plasma ...  It's not a plasma because I'm black.  Now they want me to pay a deposit and utilities on this dump.  'Do you know why?'

She has held her tongue in silence through the years of abuse by the system, but it came to a head at the New Orlean's city council meeting where discussions were under way about the tearing down of the St. Bernard projects.  When a near riotous exchange between groups opposing the tearing down of St. Bernard and groups wanting the dilapidated buildings torn down and newer ones built, Sharon unleashed verbal hell with her once silenced tongue.  The object of her oratory prowess was an acquiescent poor white boy in attendance.  The context of her scathing rebuke was, 'Just because you pay for my house, my car, my big screen and my food, Medical needs.  I will not be treated like a slave!' and 'Back up and Shut up! white boy Shut up, white boy!

Recapping from the log of the city council minutes; Sharon repines, 'Our families have been displaced all over the United States.  They are being forced to commit crimes in cities they are unfamiliar with.  It is a very uncomfortable situation for them.  Bring them back, then let's talk about redevelopment.'

Sharon directs the reporter's attention across the street to Duncan Plaza where homeless people are living in tents and states that, 'I might do better out there with one of these tents.'  She further lamented her sentiments about her situation
, 'I might be poor, but I don't have to live poor.'

Any wonder why this country is in the shape it is?  Maybe we should all just chip in and get her the plasma TV she so richly deserves!

Barb, I could tell you some stories of what I personally witnessed after the storm. But I will likely be branded as a racist by the likes of some who will refuse to acknowledge facts.

I do know that many people participated in the effort to clean up the City. I do know that one particular group of people were sorely not represented. That's a fact.

There was an "overflow" into Shreveport. The people there went "out of their way" to "HELP" to supply things and give shelter (in an emergency situation). It wasn't exactly the Ritz, but it WAS shelter, food and clothing.

My kids took clothes, toys, diapers, etc to the shelter. They came back madder than wet hens at the response they got.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

Buddy said after that, he'd burn stuff before he'd donate another thing - the hell with them... Let 'em get off their asses and go to work (like he does) and go BUY their own stuff!

My mama always said people don't appreciate things unless they WORK for them -- I think she was right...

Maybe the solution to WELFARE would be to put a time limit on it... like unemployment -- ok, ya got so many weeks and then it runs out - find a damn job or you're just gonna have to go without... sorry charlie!!!

And I still think the "commodities" program beats the hell out of food stamps. You get good healthy stable food that has to be "prepared" (oh heaven forbid!) and not a basket full of steaks and junk foods (get behind someone in the grocery store). Beans, cornmeal, cheese, flour, powdered milk, powdered eggs, peanut butter, spam, etc. Enough to feed a family and keep them healthy, but NO JUNK FOOD and it's there every month - keeps people working to hand it out - all ya gotta do is go pick it up (and yes, they DO expect you to go get it!).

I keep suggesting it to Congress, but so far they just haven't figured out how much could be saved and how many jobs it would create... I don't think the committee has met yet... Sad

Yes Barb - that would work

It would also stop people exploiting the system who aren't in it - the people who buy food stamps off people on welfare and then whine when people on welfare spend that money on booze.

Hypocrisy is hypocrisy which ever side of the hand out you're on and the trouble with over regulation is you penalise decent people as well as the layabouts.

A lot of people on welfare can't help being there. Undeniably a lot are there that don't need to be too. I have no respect for them either.. but I have a hell of a lot less respect for the vultures who prey on them.

*Refugees* were brought to a shelter in Bastrop LA.  They were taken to a local high school to shower (until the showers were set up).  They destroyed it, doing thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Ask Houston (or any city in TX for that matter), if they will accept refuges from LA again.  I can give you that answer now, "NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!".

The really "sad" part is that people who "really" NEED help are the ones who are too PROUD to ask...

We don't hear about the elderly people who can't afford meds and food (well not that often - why don't they spread that across the headlines) - these people NEED help, but most grew up in an era where you take care of yourself and don't ask for help from the government - you take care of your own or do without. Nobody OWES you anything...

But these 4th generation welfare receiptents -- give me a break!!! Get off your butts and go to work -- dig ditches, clean houses - EARN your keep!!! THEN AND ONLY THEN might you APPRECIATE some of the stuff you DO HAVE!!!

There's not a damn thing wrong with eating beans and rice and cornbread.. It fills you up and the beans have lots of protien... (and I've got about 500 recipes for leftover beans and my family has eaten them all!)

Hell, I just appreciate what I've worked to get. And lord help anyone that tries to destroy my junque!  Kiss

When I lived in Utica, NY we saw some of this.

While I don't remember everything, today food stamps can be used for food or the card's equivalent in cash (real dumb idea) by parasitic boyfriends. It usually lasts a day and is plucked dry. If any is left for the kids, it's likely spent at McDonalds...if the kids are lucky.

They tried distributing government surplus staples at armories upstate in the 60s. Stuff like powdered eggs, canned goods, flour, corn and other stuff. Didn't work. Rather than see huge cans of eggs thrown away by the neighbors, Sally and I sometimes used what was going to be discarded. Easy as hell to use for cheaply doctoring up scambled eggs and some other stuff.

The system was probably as expensive food stamps though and it lasted only as long as the surplus.

About 10 years ago or so I met and started dating a gal up in Sacramento, one day she suggest we go and watch a 49er game at her sisters place. Now her sister at the time was in her late 30’s and had four kids all from different dads and she was on welfare. We go to Elkgrove to here place now I was dreading this a bit thinking what kind of slum are we heading to and how bad of a place is this going to be right? Well we pull into a nice middle class neighborhood and pull up to a nice three bedroom two bath house, when we walk in she has descent furniture and a nice TV but yes she was a bit of a low life and during the game she even let an 8 year old have some beer, what a role model. It blew me away that someone that had never in her life had a job and I mean never worked a day in her life and had more kids to get more money from the state, what a piece of work this woman was. I just could not figure out how someone could live so well off of our tax dollars, no wonder these kind of people do not want to go get a job, she had everything she needed and had food and beer in the fridge and all this without having a job. I remember we went to her moms house one day and on the news they were talking about getting rid of welfare and her mom started on a rant and was saying stuff like what about my babies, what about my babies! I am thinking well they could get a friggen job and stop living off of us for a start.

I know some people do need help and I do not have a problem with that and think we do need some kind of system to make sure people d not go hungry but it is not meant to be a lifelong support for freeloaders like this one. I would be willing to bet she is still not working and is still working the system, a sad excuse for a person or as my cop cozen like to call people like this “oxygen thief” it’s like the people that stand on the medium with the cardboard signs saying will work for food but really just want cash so they can go get there booze and drugs and probably collect their food stamps and get there welfare on top of that and the sad part is these people probably earn a lot more than a lot of us do. I once many years ago saw a woman with such a sign, I went to a deli to get lunch and got an extra sandwich and chips and a soda and took it to her thinking she would be grateful right? I walked up to her and said well I can’t give you a job but here is some food, she just stood there and stared at me like I just slapped her, clearly she did not want food or a job just cash. I know some of the people out there who do this really do need help but I think most are just scamming us and it is sad because I would like to help but do not want to help someone who is a scammer. I just donate time now at a food bank and that way I know I am helping people and not scammers at least for the most part. Sorry for rambling on like this, just got carried away a bit on this subject.

Charlie, I can remember back in the 50s. My Dad's parents were on commodities (my grandfather was crippled and grandmother took care of him - don't remember a whole lot - he died when I was 11). But once a month Dad would drive from Gladewater to Arkadelphia AR to take her to get her commodities.

They didn't use all of them and would get out what they were going to use for the month and she'd send the rest home with Dad. I can remember when he started unloading that stuff we thought it was Christmas... Cheese, peanut butter, REAL butter, beans, rice, flour, corn mean, SPAM!! and I can't remember what all, but Mom used it all. We didn't waste anything. Even the powered eggs Mom used for cooking.

But instead of paying farmers NOT to grow stuff - this would be more beneficial to FEED people (and see that it goes toward feeding people) than the foodstamp program. So if some of it gets given away - it still keeps the farms and canneries in business and keeps people working (not to mention the distribution centers). Hell, I'm not proud - I'd go sign up for it... (I can taste that REAL butter now -- and the SPAM.. Mom always called that Ham STeak).

But seriously... it would stop some of fraud -- I'm sure people would find a way to cheat the system and complain that it was unfair, but ... and then we'd have to "hire" diaticians to teach those "poor" people how to "cook" it! And McDonald's would probably stage a protest, but......  (Oh, I forgot - there was also Oatmeal in those packages - so maybe the kids could get a breakfast every once in a while).

But I'd rather my taxes go for something useful than being spent on drugs (sold to others and then spent on drugs - that's what I'm seeing a lot of around here).

Oh well.... Kiss

Sometimes welfare saves lives but how about this: New York State will pay for cell phones and service so long as people qualify for a Benefit Card. Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Now phones and TV are luxuries that people can do WITHOUT!!! That's a little over the TOP for taxpayers.

It's a fact that people are obese.. So learn to WALK!! It's good for you -- everyone doesn't need to drive two blocks - we WALKED when we were kids - we had ONE car per family and it didn't hurt us a damn bit... We ate COOKED food at HOME... it didn't kill us... We went to school in decent clothes (and not name brands - but clean and over our rears) and we survived!!

BUT we also RESPECTED our elders, said the Pledge of Allegiance every morning, said a little prayer before school started and went to church on Sunday.

We were TAUGHT to work for what we wanted (not to steal or expect things to be given to us).

The class of '62 (and we've stayed very close over the past almost 50 years) had 86 in it (26 now deceased) meet every 5 years... Out of that class we have NO one to really be ashamed of (well one girl got caught embezzeling and went to jail for a couple of years, but has repented and is doing well now - gainfully employed and all that - talked to her this week). What I'm getting at is that over the years NONE of us went on welfare - we all went to WORK, raised families and are mostly retired (or trying to be), but over the years some have had BIG problems, but the class has pitched in and HELPED and kept those from having to ask anyone else for help.

We still have a class treasury (when it gets low, I'm the class bully and I make phone calls and get it built back up - that's my job). But over the years we've made house payments, helped with medical stuff, even built a bathroom for one classmate who's son was dying and she was having to "carry" him down the hall to the bathroom (he was 21).

That may sound trivial, but it's the old fashioned way of "neighbor helping neighbor" and that's how we were brought up. In my way of thinking - we need to get some of these "values" back in our lives..

Guess ya'll really wanted my opinion this morning.. Maybe I should start sleeping later... Wink Kiss

The U.S. Census will have interesting statistics this year. But every state usually has a breakdown of welfare recipients that are reported annually.

Please do not assume that welfare recipients are highly represented by one race. You may find that most are disabled, a higher proportion mentally ill, and even a greater percentage are children of various races.

It's too easy to paint with such a broad brush. Generalities serve no purpose but to distort reality.

I'll repeat myself, yet again, *noone* has made any assumptions about anything here.  The original story happened to be about a woman who is black.  Some of the stories happen to be about people who are of different ethnicities.  The reality of this is that I'm tired of paying my hard earned money to anyone who milks the system and refuses to get off their lazy asses and do something to better themselves.

The latest statistics that I found were from the 2000 Census.

"•Race: About 1 in 4 Black mothers of childbearing ages (1.5 million) were AFDC recipients, higher than the 7 percent of corresponding White mothers (2.1 million). Despite these differences in recipiency rates, Black AFDC mothers did not have significantly more children than their White counterparts.
•Hispanic origin: Nearly 1 in 5 Hispanic mothers (784,000) aged 15 to 44 were on AFDC. By comparison, about 1 in 10 (3.0 million) non-Hispanic mothers were AFDC recipents. Although both Hispanic and non-Hispanic mothers on AFDC were an average of 20 years old when they had their first child, Hispanic women had almost 0.7 more children than non-Hispanic women. About 3 in 10 Hispanic mothers on AFDC were born outside the United States. "

Food Stamps
"The chances of receiving food
stamps differ by the race, ethnicity,
and nativity of the mother.

Race: About 1 in 3, or 1.9 million,
Black mothers of childbearing ages
were food stamp recipients, compared
with 1 in 9, or 3.2 million
White mothers. Despite these differences
in recipiency rates, Black food
stamp mothers did not have significantly
more children than their White
counterparts. (See table.)

Hispanic origin: One in four (or
1.1 million) Hispanic mothers aged
15 to 44 were getting food stamps."

I don't think you'll find anyone that would disagree with you. And I would also agree that the system needs a complete overhaul in that it makes staying on the system much easier than living away from the system. It really should be the other way around, but it's not.

And I also agree that there is this continued sense of entitlement that is not just welfare recipients but seems to be a pandemic rash occurring on much of everything. There used to be a time when being on state assistance was demeaning - it is no longer regarded that way. There used to be a time when pregnancies out of wedlock were a social stigma and taboo - they are no longer regarded that way and are even encouraged (i.e. Jennifer Lopez's new movie).

I'll go further in saying our society has degraded and eroded so far that the basic morals most of us born before the 60's grew up with seem to no longer exist. It's the symptom of a much, much bigger problem.

I have no problem with CITIZENS of the USA receiving help when needed.  Yes there are people that truely need a helping hand but the sum total of the folks getting help is way above what is needed.

I have seen quadreplegics have gainful employment within a very respected buisness.  It is ATTITUDE that makes a person.  I drive by places on my way home from work at night and see people on welfare and disability that sit and drink all day and from what I can see lead normal lives off the backs of the US tax payers.

There is very little room in my mind for someone to claim full disability unless you are bedridden or hospitalized.

The welfare system is set up to encourage people to become dependant on government which in turn supports a political party that feeds dependancy upon government.  Same could be said for the public school system.

And people wonder why the country is in the mess it is in.  No, Wallstreet didn't cause this.  (big government helped them too)    The system is broken!

-P.
