Worth a try and if it works there are a lot of farmers that would benefit from selling their hay to the cleanup crews. I like it they should give it a try.

Could Hay Help With Oil Spill Disaster?
Wednesday, May 12, 2010

WILDWOOD -- Darryl Carpenter, vice president of Florida-based CW Roberts Contracting, and subcontractor Otis Goodson mixed hay into bowls of water and oil.

In just moments, the oil sticks to the hay and just the water is left.

“It is impressive. We don't know that it will work in the open water, but we think that there is a chance to do it,” said Chuck Roberts, CW Roberts Contracting president.

CW Roberts Contracting largely works in road construction. They say they use hay every day to prevent erosion, as well as contaminants from going into sensitive areas.

“We just took that knowledge and we thought maybe this would work,” Roberts said. “Once we tried it and saw it worked in the lab, we thought maybe it was worth letting other people look at it and see if this was a way to prevent some areas from being damaged by the oil spill.”

The company says they just want a chance to test the theory that this could be part of the fix to clean up BP's oil spill.

“I'm sure it won't take care of the whole problem in the Gulf. It's important that the flow of the oil is stopped as soon as possible,” Roberts said. “But there are certain areas, especially if they're isolated that we think it has real potential, and all we need is a change in the current and it will get much more serious for Florida than it is right now.”

The company said they have heard some concerns that turtles and other sea life could eat the oil covered hay before it's removed. They believe the risk is even worse if something isn't done soon.

Hay is about a hundred bucks a ton.  It looks good in two inches of water but what about in two hundred feet of water. Would It  sink?

i would imagine it would until it gets saturated. bout the only thing i could tell ya about hay is a few inches of rain on an untarped  load of hay = a few thousand pounds. if it sits there long enough it will probably sink

I may have been dreaming it,  but I thought I heard on some newscast, that beauty salons across the country were being asked to donate all hair that they cut.  Hair is an excellent absorber.

O.K. You can all laugh at me now because I probably dreamt it.   Grin

I've heard of dog groomers saving up the hair they trim for this purpose, too.

We are very cautious about using the 'solution' word around here - hay is a response that might be useful in some spots, but is not a solution or cure for this type of cluster f#@%. Thousands of miles of coast line ... that's a lot of straw, hair or kitty litter.

The outer boundary of what we currently believe is feasible is far short of what we actually must do.
