Obama: May jobs report show economy strengthening
Jun 4th, 2010 at 12:47pm

June 4, 2010, 10:33am EDT

HYATTSVILLE, Md., June 4 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Friday the gain of 431,000 jobs in May is a sign the U.S. economy is getting stronger, although there will still be ups and downs going forward.

"This report is a sign that our economy is getting stronger by the day," Obama said in remarks to about about 50 workers at a large truck garage in Maryland.

"A lot of businesses that were hit hard during this downturn, they are starting to hire again. Workers who were laid off are starting to get their jobs back," he said.

However, Obama said there would be "ups and downs" ahead.

The Labor Department said on Friday payrolls rose 431,000 as the government added 411,000 workers to conduct the U.S. Census, the largest monthly increase since March 2000 and one that marked a fifth straight month of gains.

But U.S. private employers hired fewer workers than expected in May, just 41,000 after rising 218,000 in April, a setback for the labor market recovery, even as temporary Census hiring pushed overall payrolls growth to its fastest pace in 10 years.

Obama acknowledged that most of the new jobs were the Census positions.

"So these are temporary jobs that are going to last until the fall, and that may be reflected in future jobs reports," he said.

"But even if you put those temporary jobs aside, there's no doubt that we saw another month of private sector job growth, and that is obviously critical, because when businesses are hiring again, people start spending again and that, in turn, gives businesses more and more incentive to grow."

And the stock market continues to validate every word he utters. /sarc (Dow down 250 points as of this writing)

What planet is this guy on? The destruction of the US economy is looking more and more like an inside job.

If anybody can defend this guy and his administration, please have at it - cuz I ain't seein' it.

The only reason it's showing an increase is due to the census workers HIRED BY THE GOVERNMENT.  What's it going to show when those people are laid off?

Love the spin...

Thank God we had all those shining years of federal fiscal responsibility to start off the millennium. Just imagine how bad it might have been.....For this we can thank our saviours, the Republicans who spent much of the last decade helping drive up the deficit with unjustifiable tax cuts and unrestrained spending. So now it's they who are now caterwauling about fiscal responsibility.

Cool.

Charlie, I'm not defending the Republicans of the damage they did.  They definitely did not represent the party well.  If you look up the history of a Republican and what they stood for, they've surely strayed since then.

Now can you PLEASE just once be critical of the current administration for what is going on currently?  Or are you just going to keep on blaming the "previous administration" every time President Obama is criticized?

Cheesy

No, Charlie. This isn't what previous Republicans in power have signed on to. But it is what the future ones will.

Enough of the "Bush's fault" crap. It's wearing real thin. It's like comparing the mechanic who fixes the getaway car with the guy who does the stick-up.

Sure! Setting aside that what is called the "great recession" started while George Bush was President and that it was his party that started with Wall Street bailouts....you bet  Shocked Roll Eyes

Obama is probably moving too slowly but frankly, just like Bush, he's caught between what's best and what's easy. I'll be happy to reply if you tell me...other than right-left political rantings what he's done wrong. Let's get going on this.

Ok then, how about the article Brew posted here on this thread.  Obama says it's evidence of a strengthening economy, but that is not true.  The only reason the numbers are up is due to the hiring of the 2010 Census workers, who will now be laid off that the census taking is over.

What do you think of this?

It's taking us a long time. We're still getting over the blame it on Clinton 24 hour daily rants from the GOP and George Bush that blamed him for everything wrong in the world starting from the Great flood. It was a time.

I've heard of the Census Takers hirings thing before. It's been around for some time. Nonetheless, while no doubt not so simple, it is valid and it shows that stupidity is one thing that prevails no matter who is in charge.

The kicker to the census workers is that they are hired, trained, work a few days and are laid off.....Then they are "rehired", trained again and work a few days.  This happens over and over and with each hiring and training of the SAME individual it counts as a job created.  Talk about creative bookeeping!

Obama and his administration is as phoney as it gets.

He's the future of conservative thought. His plan for Medicare and Social Security will not only make both programs perpetually solvent, the two together will eliminate our national debt. Not just the budget deficit - the debt.

He's been asked numerous times why he doesn't seek the nomination of his party, and his answer is always the same: "I have three reasons, and they're 5, 7, and 8. My job as a US Representative is not my primary one. My marriage and my family are."

So let him be the idea guy and let somebody else take it and run with it.

From where I'm sitting - looks like we're all Monday morning quarterbacks...

It took a "few" years to get our country into this mess we're in... Now we expect one guy (let's not even mention Congress) to get us out in no time flat.

There's enough blame to go around to all corners of the political spectrum.., but NO ONE seems to have any real solutions.. Reps are just saying NO WAY to everything that's suggested BUT they don't have any suggestions as to WHAT to do (most of them were in on the making of the problems weren't they?) - The Dems might not have any "good" suggestions, but at least they're throwing some things in the ring. Obama is having one thing after another hit him.

Bush had 9-1-1 hit him and then Katrina - Obama has had the oil spill hit him (without warning). He's still fighting the fallouts of 9-1-1 and Katrina and now has another major catastrophe to deal with. Maybe he's not handling it just exactly like everyone thinks he should, but what would YOU do? I don't have any suggestions - do you? And everyone who's running him down - so far I haven't heard any suggestions come out of their mouths, have you? A year ago everyone was yelling, "Drill Baby Drill" and we did - it screwed up! Now it's all Obama's fault... Maybe "creative" reporting has a little to do with all this... (from all the channels).

There are so many things wrong in this country right now (most of it Obama inherited). Congress should be working night and day to help clear up a whole lot of it, but they're too busy going on talk shows to explain what Obama is doing wrong rather than doing what we're PAYING them to do... Isn't it about time we starting putting the blame where it needs to go? On CONGRESS... If those jerks had LAWS in place and some SAFEGARDS and some OVERSIGHT we just MIGHT not have this latest problem! But they don't have TIME to tend to business... they're too busy "talking" nonsense most of the time and trying to get reelected!

Problem is the House and Senate are run by Democrats, and they won't have anything to do with it.

So we just step on the accelerator down Debt Road.

What completely astounds me and makes me realize this situation will not change is the intellect dishonesty in the utterances of our public officials.

Truth and common sense are dead.

To whom are these genuine lies aimed toward?

Any idiot can see what is being said is spun in such a way that you can only conclude that they think we are all too stupid to see it's a load of crap.

My disgust and contempt for these people, the politicians, the press and ignorant placated citizenry is complete.

I'm certain this experiment that is the United States is off on a tangent that is unsustainable.

We use to have enough wealth to help the people who needed it. But now, we're headed toward insolvency and the "needy" population grows along with our Government.

I'm ready for some hard truth from a real leader and am willing to suffer as long as the takers are with me. Unfortunately, I have little confidence that the takers are willing to sacrifice or be willing to listen to common sense or the truth...or for that matter, vote for a real leader espousing common sacrifice.

Hence, the lies.

Barb, I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with you about the ideas bit.  The Republican floated several different versions of the health bill that were not as onerous, nor did they give the power to the federal government, but the administration refused to even consider them.  The leadership in the House and the Senate quashed them without even a hearing on the floor.  We said "Drill Baby, Drill" alright, but where have we been allowed to drill?  There have been no new leases allowed within the continental US, nor in Alaska.  In fact, some of the areas have been deactivated by the Feds.  We have done nothing to tap the Bakkan (sp?) reserves, nor will the government allow us to although the estimates of the oil available range from 3-10 times the amount of Saudi reserves.

The Republicans spent like drunken sailors and that is why so many of us did not support them in the last election, but there is no knowingly honest way to say they have not tried to float ideas out there.  You have to go beyond what the alphabet soup people are telling you in the news and in the papers and get the word from the Reps and Senators themselves to find out.  There are a lot of ideas that have been floated from both Repubs and Dems as well as from others who are not affiliated with either that don't fit the parameters of Obama's agenda and never see the light of day.
