im going to test the beast
Jul 2nd, 2010 at 1:51pm

im going to test the beast tonight, and also the effectiveness of st john's wort, to boot, let me explain my reasoning, ive been taking fever few for some 11yrs now, and it DOES reduce the severity of migraines and ch, for me anyway, the st johns wort ive been taking for about a week 1 tab a day,[ if i take two tabs im like ," hey man wanna debate the meaning of life for fun " Grin, similar to a week at Glastonbury  Grin]....
so i ve got 10 pints of old speckled hen lined up, im gonna chug them down and see what occurs, i just want to know if st john's wort fu+ks the beast up the arse, i may be a complete a'hole doing this, but i need to know for me , and it may help others in the process.....i will post back sometime tomorrow , wish me luck

St John's Wort is good for dealing with the depression associated with CH, but IMHO it does nothing for the HA's themselves.  Good luck.

I hope it's not too late to turn back - St. John's Wort isn't particularly known to be a CH fighter.

Strictly relying on doctors for CH treatment is often a prescription that will keep you in a whole lot of PAIN. Doctors are WAY behind in many respects, and they are usually completely unaware of the benefits of high flow 100% O2.

There are lots of effective treatments documented at this site. With all the misery I have to endure each week, for a great chuckle, I'd like to know what St. Johns Wort or Wart, if you prefer, and olde speckled hen is.  Please enlighten this poor cave dweller.

Old Speckled Hen is an excellent English ale, which is exported all over the world (we even get it here in NZ).

And despite the name's obvious connection to a hen, it was named after a car!

here ya go .............

St. John's wort is being studied for effectiveness in the treatment of certain somatoform disorders. Results from the initial studies are mixed and still inconclusive; some research has found no effectiveness, other research has found a slight lightening of symptoms. Further study is needed and is being performed.

A constituent chemical, hyperforin, may be useful for treatment of alcoholism, although dosage, safety and efficacy have not been studied.[13] Hyperforin has also been found to have antibacterial properties against gram-negative bacteria, although dosage, safety and efficacy has not been studied.[14]

A randomized controlled trial of St. John's wort found no significant difference between it and placebo in the management of ADHD symptoms over eight weeks. However, the St. John's Wort extract used in the study, originally confirmed to contain 0.3% hypericin, was allowed to degrade to levels of 0.13% hypericin and 0.14% hyperforin. Given that the level of hyperforin was not ascertained at the beginning of the study, and levels of both hyperforin and hypericin were well below that used in other studies, little can be determined based on this study alone.[15]

A research team from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) published a study entitled, “Hypericum perforatum. Possible option against Parkinson's disease”, which suggests that this plant with antidepressant properties has antioxidant active ingredients that could help reduce the neuronal degeneration caused by the disease.[16]

Recent evidence suggests that daily treatment with St. Johns wort may improve the most common physical and behavioural symptoms associated with cluster headaches

And what may not have been clear in that load of medical technicalities is that St. John's Wort is an herbCool

ty, for the information.  After I asked, I looked it up and saw that it could have life threatening effects if combined with some of the medications that we take. Two that I take were mentioned, Amitriptilyne and I think the other was lithium.  Seen any warnings about that, or do you take while off all medications?  Just a curious Kat, lol.  Again, ty, for taking the time to explain it to me.

I have to weigh in here with a cautionary note;

As with ALL information, medications, over-the-counter, and natural remedies that are discussed and tried, you MUST MUST MUST be sure of the properties of all of the above and how they may interact.

Serotonin syndrome is a very real danger to many CHers because of the use of triptans - and St. John's Wort (or Wart Wink ) has been long used and known for it's anti-depressive properties.  I have not checked my documents, but I seem to recall a paper in my archives that does mention this very herb as a potential danger for serotonin syndrome - which, if unrecognized and untreated, can be fatal.

Now, about that speckled hen....
As a Canadian, living in the US, born to a true blue Brit, having spent a short jaunt in Bavaria, the best beer in the world is Kristallweizen Tongue
Now if only I could actually DRINK the stuff again *sigh*
