My wife brought me a slushy yesterday ,first one I've had in years.

One good glug and oh my goodness the pain , I've had brain freeze before but this was more like an instant ch hit ,my right eye went all droopy or at least it felt like it did , burning up behind  my right ear and the pain did I mention the pain , I though I was going to have to break out the trex but thankfully the pain was gone within a minuet ...few.

Think i will be more careful with cold stuff in the future cos that was like an instant k7

Hi Nigel,

Sorry you had such a bad reaction from drinking a slushie!

I have often used the "brain freeze" description when trying to explain to people how my head feels. Most people have experienced this and it gives them a better understanding of what we go through everyday when in cycle.

I guess I won't be drinking any slushies or  coffee coolata's from DD anytime soon!

Really cold stuff like slushies and ice cream have always been a potential trigger for me. My guess is we feel the pain along the same trigeminal nerve path, and if its touchy already (in cycle) no surprise it could trigger a Cluster attack. We give up so much, don't we? Sigh. God bless, Nigel! lance Cry

Strangely enough, I always found extreme cold worked.

I used to have an air conditioning unit at my head all night to the extent whereby I had frost burn in my face.

I can understand my physical issues, but CH just does not make sense.

Thanks Black,

I always thought that "brain freeze" from icey cold foods was that nerve in our heads reacting. Now I know for sure. thanks. Good research.

Like the article says, it's a good analagy of our pain that just about everyone can relate to. Except CH is much worse of course.

Some things are instinctive. I put my RedBulls in the freezer so i purposely induce brain freeze when I chug them. It goes rigth to the pain, and now Black has explained why...Great article, Thanx.
