Using Ice packs-any tips on relief to tooth pain?
Jul 25th, 2010 at 8:47pm

I have just discovered this site - whilst I am not pleased to see others suffering as I am, it is nice to know I am not alone and not going insane.  I am currently going through the 3rd bout I have had in 5 years - I didn't get cluster headaches until I hit 40 years old.   (In addition to prescribed drugs which seem to have less and less effect) I have been using ice blocks (solid plastic packs) this time around; one on the back of my neck and the other on/around my right temple - sometimes rubbed so hard/vigorously on my head that it feels that I am rubbing my scalp off - if I could work out how to insert it into my skull I would!  However, whilst it is not complete relief it does act as a distraction for a time.  I find that the more I freeze my brain the better - although at times I am not sure if this doesn't sometimes add as much pain as the headache itself.  I sometimes find that I have been freezing my head longer than was perhaps necessary, but daren't stop because the distraction does at least do something for me.  My worst problem is when the headache reaches my upper jaw on the right hand side, I can't seem to get any relief for that and feel like prizing my teeth out to help.  Has anyone got any suggestions on what I can do for my teeth (bearing in mind both hands are occupied with ice packs - eating ice doesn't seem to help at all.  I have been sitting up waiting for tonights bout, which thankfully hasn't happened yet and am finding that I am getting fearful of falling asleep as it mostly kicks in when sleeping.  Does anyone else get a feeling of elation (well at least enormous relief that it feel like elation/great happiness) when it is all over?

I had the same experience and had two teeth pulled thinking they were the problem. This was before I had even heard of CHs. I've since been enlightened, and have successfully been treating the condition with alternative meds.
To make a long story short, go to clusterbusters.com, the sister site, and do a lot of reading.

is it possible that your wisdom teeth are coming in? your probably too old for wisdom teeth but its just a thought. i would certainly see a dentist and get a few x-rays.

as for the ice a frozen bag of peas, corn or anything similar to that size works well for an ice pack.

if you have an infected tooth get some antibiotics.
take a shoot of whiskey or rum and soak the infected tooth. something hard. keep the tooth soaking constantly. your not trying to get drunk your just trying to numb it until you can see a dentist. Listerine works good for this as well but dont go generic. the key is the alcohol content.

if you have any questions about clusterbusting they have a message board. Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register
be sure to read up on this as much as you can before you decide to take this route. thats what i did and it worked for me. Wink keep us posted

Try taking melatonin before going to sleep. It prevents night hits for me (most of the time).

Have you tried O2??? That's the magic bullet for MOST of us here.

For me - tooth pain always has gone with the CH - with or without ice. BUT my dentist tells me that nothing is wrong with my teeth. I get EAR cramps also, but my ears are fine according to the doc... go figure... The beast just hits where it wants to...

Get your arsnel ready for the devil when he shows up and kick his rear. Let us know how you're doing...

Tooth pain has always gone hand in hand for me as well, and though it doesn't "stop" the pain, it does help distract, and that is taking an electric toothbrush and brushing the area till the hit ends.

Before I was Dx, I tried many times to yank my teeth out myself.  Yeah stupid I know...but I was desperate.
