NFL: Vikings' Percy Harvin released from hospital

Associated Press
Posted: 08/20/2010 09:22:24 PM PDT
Updated: 08/20/2010 10:14:36 PM PDT

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin is back with the team after an overnight hospital stay following a scary migraine attack, though his return to the field remains unclear.

Harvin was on the practice field Friday morning wearing a T-shirt, shorts and tennis shoes, drinking Gatorade while smiling and chatting with coaches. He exchanged handshakes and hugs with a few teammates -- waving at Pat Williams after the defensive tackle yelled, "Hey, Perce, what's up?" -- before walking inside the team's practice facility.

Harvin was taken away from Winter Park, Minn., by ambulance Thursday after getting sick and collapsing on the field, a sobering scene that prompted the Vikings to end practice early.

Harvin has missed all but a handful of practices since training camp began three weeks ago, plagued again by the unpredictable, debilitating migraine episodes that can leave him unable to function, let alone put on a helmet and pads and run around the field.

But Harvin was, by all accounts, doing fine one day later.

Why not?  I know of someone who has migraines who cannot function at all when she has a migraine.

Could be Migraines or CH we don't know all the facts.  I'm guessing here but it might be the putting on the helmet comment in the article that got Joe's attention, and other descriptive terms used.

I know it's a reach, but I sent the media center for the Vikings an E-mail. I said based on the speed of onset of his attacks, and the severity of the pain, it sounded more like CH then Migrain. I then asked them to just have the medical staff review the characteristics of CH, which I attached.

A serious long shot I know Roll Eyes

News reports are that he's been dealing with this for many years. This also happened in 2006 during his freshman year at Florida:

Quote:
He returned to the lineup for the Auburn game and continued his sporadic freshman year performance, rushing for a 42 yard touchdown against rival Florida State. However, Harvin suffered a neck sprain in the game and was taken off the field on a stretcher.

I guess it's worth a shot mentioning CH to his medical staff, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

None of us are doctors. And just because we've discovered this huge hammer in our toolbox, doesn't mean Harvin's problem is a nail.

It's just a headache, give him a donut!!!

And I hear ya Brew, but people are of the mistaken impression that just because he has a bunch of team doctors.....who know a boatload about ACL's and Rotator Cuffs, they'll know everything about everything. The chances they know squat about CH are miniscule. That's why I sent the PDF for the team doc's to read. Wink

I double checked the Vikings website after reading and posting the initial article I'd seen above.
Yes, he has had a few attacks before as the article on the Vikings website states.

I agree with Ginger - great idea and action!  Hey, worth a try in any case...

And, Joe, I totally agree with your statement above.  Most docs (barring the primary care fields - internal med, family med, pediatrics, ob/gyn) only know their particular field - if he's surrounded by orthopedists and he has a headache, it'd be like an English speaker stuck in rural Russia...

Well it can't hurt to try, but I'm not sure how you got this above out of the article?  I don't mean to stir the pot, but do we now think migraines can't be severe enough to stop a football player?  Migraines stop people in their tracks who have a lot less physically demanding jobs than football, so I can't even begin to imagine how it is trying to play in the heat of summer training camp w/severe migraines.... Plus the whole getting sick and collapsing thing is a lot more common in migraine than in cluster headache.

But still - can't hurt to try. Smiley

No I got it from the interviews on ESPN from his felow players....."one second he's fine, the next second he's about passed out with pain."

And I appear to inadverdantly stepped on several migrainers toes without meaning to. Nothing in any of my posts was meant to infer migrains do not hurt or would incapacitate a NFL football Player!!! Me culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa........sheesh!!!!  Wink

That comment brings back so many memories from the time when I had absolutely no idea that I had ch...

Anyway, many of us in here have been misdiagnosed for years. I'm suggesting that it's the case in here, but I think it's great that you guys have been active and sent them info. Now the team docs can take a look at it and then decide if it's something they should consider. Although some media coverage for ch would never hurt, I still don't hope that Percy Harvin has ch. I don't wish it for anyone.

Back in here, one Finnish actress in a popular TV show (soap opera shown at prime time) is apparently a ch sufferer, but ever since the small news story broke, she has never mentioned it or talked about it, which is a shame. So, even if this player would have ch, it doesn't mean that he will be a ch spokesperson sometime in future.

PF days to us all,
Sanna

An article I saw on him yesterday said he collapsed in pain and vomited.  Atypical for CH.  Either way the man in is pain, and I hope they find a way to deal with it effectively for him.
