Just Happy
Aug 31st, 2010 at 1:29am

It is officially the last day of August and no headaches, yet!!!  August is when I had them last year.  I am having some red wine occasionally with continued success.  I guess I am now on borrowed time.  That is okay...I will take it...every day is a gift!!!  Just wanted to post some good news.

After every cycle my sister has, she says, "Oh...I dont think I will have anymore."  Haha...she has said that for 46 years now.  Nothing wrong with positive thinking (as long as you stay prepared).

I can only tell you what I have done, but it is no guarantee!  Clusters do as they wish for the most part!

-Verapamil 10 mg twice daily year 'round (Blood Pressure Med...very small dose)
-Paxil CR 25 mg (Anti-Depressant...regular dose)
-Flexeril 1/2 tablet at night (Muscle Relaxant...very small dose)
-Corgard 1/4 tablet at night (Blood Pressure Med...very small dose)
-Amitriptaline 10 mg at night (Anti-depressant...very small dose)
-Multi-Vitamin and 2000 Vitamin D daily (Large doses)

I have used most of these meds for about 5 or 6 years because my Internist convinced me to do so against my wishes or belief it would help.  I have only had 2 or 3 cycles during that time.  Previously, I had 1 or 2 cycles per year.  Sorry I don't have my calendar to tell you exactly how many years and cycles.  Believe it or not, I quit counting.  The reason I was happy is because once I have a cycle, I am always afraid of the same month of the next year due to my previous history for so many years.  I will tell you that when I do have a cycle, it is no better...still 8 weeks on the nose and terrible.

Also, I really watch that my blood pressure stays consistent.  I try to avoid an overload of allergens that bother me...mold, dust, certain puppies, seasonal.  I stretch my neck several times daily.  Drink lots of water.  Treat congestion/sinus/allergy symptoms promptly.  Take an additional 10 mg dose of Verapamil if I feel the least bit of cluster area pressure.

Hope that gives you something to think about.

Joni

Sure.  Something else that helped for me for a long time year round was Nasanex Nose Spray.  Once a day when out of cycle, then twice a day in cycle.  It is a steroid.  I used it for a looong time and needed a break from it.  Even though young children can take it, steroids bother me over time.  We swap around ideas in my family.  Between all of us, we have tried it all over the past zillion years.  Most of my family members are very passionate about Imitrex....just not me, yet.  They don't care about prevention as long as they have their Imitrex, but I had rather go the prevention route first, then deal with what happens.  I take Zyprexa to abort.

Matthew-if you look up Zyprexa, it is pretty scary, but you only take it to abort and only the short time of your cycles.  I take the lowest...2.5mg.  It will abort within 5-10 minutes and keeps me pain free for about 24-35 hours guaranteed, then it is up to the HA when I have another one.

She is in cycle now and I just spoke with her.  She had the nerve to say (and get tickled) that she had already gone 2 days without a headache early in this cycle, so she thinks she is getting over them.  Smiley  It has gotten to be a joke now.

Yes...that scares some people.  It concerned me at first, but my daughter said it was okay for me in this capacity.  She is a pharmacist.

Haha...after so many years of suffering, we feel about half crazy and might as well laugh it off.  She does a better humorous denial thing than me, though. We have a good time and it is sooo nice to have someone that knows exactly what you are going through without even telling them.
