Update on Cycle and Prednisone Musings
Oct 5th, 2010 at 1:23pm

Whew, without a computer for a few days so haven't posted as to where we are since I HATE typing on the husband's Iphone. New technology be damned, give me a keyboard anyday!

After the last post, my husband had 3 pain free days and is 4 weeks into his cycle. We actually tentatively thought the cycle was over. Lucas thinks his cycles last about a month, I would have sworn it was usually 6 weeks, but he would know more than I. Kicking myself (literally quite mad at myself) that this is the first cycle I've taken an active hand in the treatment instead of just holding on for the ride. Wish we had YEARS worth of journal documentation on this instead of the nothing we do have. Perhaps its finally really accepting this thing- or maybe being in our 30s now and parents that make us realize we're the resposible ones for this.

SO- that brings us to this: 3 pf days and nights followed by shadow knocked out with oxygen yesterday evening and ha in early morning hours knocked out by Imitrex. Weirdly, he's taking Prednisone for a condition with his foot that he just started on, so I wonder if that could have something to do with his painfree days. Yes sir, Mr. Bob Johnson, I PROMISE I will update with the dosage once I get home to check the bottle- I realize without specific information it's impossible to give specific advice and suggestions.

SO here is my other question- this cycle could end at any time, should I still try Batch's PH recipe, or the melatonin? Lucas is so far able to stay comfortable now with O2 and Imitrex. Just wonder if we'd be able to get a real scientific method answer on if something worked or not in the time remaining. Or do we hit it with ALL we have and then narrow it down next time?

He also meets with his doctor tomorrow (mostly to get the Imitrex perscription renewed so we can stockpile) but we'll see what he says.

Thanks again for all your help. Feel like I'll never reach a point where I've said that enough. And we plan on sticking around after this cycle to help where we can!

Couple of comments while waiting for your dosing information.

IF he really has has short (6-wks cycle), then no need to start using a preventive med since the cycle will end before you can make adjustments, etc. in the preventive.

My bias: using treatments which have an established track record for effectiveness, safety, etc. vs. using the latest med/concept, etc. which has just hit the market. AND, the more meds, treatments, etc. you use at the same time the more impossible it is to know--for future reference--what works for you.

With a short cycle, using an abortive which gives fast relief is about all that will be needed.

But more when you write....

Sound advice, and my thanks.

I just worry that there are not enough years in a lifetime to try everything and give it the good scientific method trial since there are so many treatments, dosages, and combinations to try. So good to know we have not even scratched the surface of treatment options available. We'll hold off on some of these then, except the Melatonin if his cylce goes long.

I'm with Bob, stick with what is working for now. But also continue to read and educate yourself. That way when one thing stops working...as often happens with  the beast....you've got a plan B and plan C already lined up.

Alright, it's only 20mg of Prednisone, don't know if that is enough to cause 3 days pf. Fingers crossed it's the cycle winding down. Thanks!

I am new on here and from NZ. for the last month I have been taking 3 beta blockers per day plus 2 cafergot tablets. My headaches have stopped. The doc is checking to see if I can tolerate that level of cafergot. MY CH began 20 years ago and came and went but in the last 5 years they have come to stay. I was getting at least 2 a day in the finish and was desperate. anyway for now this is what is helping me and stopping the headaches. I cant describe the releif.

I'm not sure your question about prednisone was answered, except by Joe affirming how it can work for him. Yes, prednisone (usually starting high-60mg-and tapering off gradually) has been an effective abortive for many. Myself included. Unfortunately, the CHs come back in a relatively short time. Still, I have used it from time to time just to get a break. Good luck and God bless! lance

Graemel that's great news, keep on eye on your circulation, cold fingers and toes etc., cafergot can be a pretty strong med that way!

Have you looked into oxgen at all? Been a real life saver for many on the boards, glad you found us.
