Perceptive thought
Nov 4th, 2010 at 7:29pm

A good friend of mine, Eric Mahler, a young Marine, recently told his mom:
One of my instructors once said to our class "one day one of you may die painfully, cold and slowly on the side of a afghan mountain crying for your mother. But just know that because of you, your mother... and everyone else... back home can go to Walmart and not worry about being blown up by a suicide bomber. They can go to the voting polls and vote for who they want to represent them, and go to church and serve what ever God they choose.... You are the one who makes sure no one takes their freedom. The freedom from fear, their freedom want, their freedom of religion."

I thought it was rather perceptive of him to remember and share it with us.

Is there a word that describes heartbreaking sadness to the point I'm crying, pride in a young man I don't know and all of those that serve, and extreme gratitude for their service?   If so...that's the word I'd describe what you just wrote Jerry...

People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.  George Orwell

Thanks Jerry. May peace truly come in our time so all may sleep peacefully at night. Blessings. lance

It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.

I love that quote, Lance.  Thank you for reminding me of it.  I like to think that the writers of "A Few Good Men" knew that quote when they had Colonel Jessup say these words:
"You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. "

and also "I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide it."

Me too...though I suspect Orwell intended a larger message. That's what great writers do...make ya THINK.

Thank you mosaic...nicely done....I immediately thought of Col Jessups quote when I read this thread. The first time I saw it...it caused me to get up out of my chair.

The character...brilliantly played by Jack ...is so unlikable that it's hard to be on his side...BUT, he is RIGHT...and way too many are unwilling or too ignorant to admit it....couldn't think how to say it like you did.

My other thought is...old men are WAY to willing to send young men and women onto those walls and  into harms way.....the least I and we can do... is NOT to forget them....

Best,

Jon

Jon,

I appreciate your comments,  My two are going on their own.  I didn't send them, although I will admit I tried to raise them with the concept of putting ourselves on the line for others.  Frankly, the reason this old man has to "send" the young is they won't take me.  I called the Marine Corps recruiters on Sept 12 to see if there was any capacity in which I could serve.  I'm too old and too fat.  I can only fix half of that.  (He was a LITTLE more diplomatic than that, but not much.)

Yo Jer',

You are DEFINITELY NOT one of the "old men" I refer to...that would be the politicians...and I am reminded of John Fogerty's "Fortunate Son". I am not a Father...but I can imagine the anguish of sending a son/daughter into harms way...and I cannot imagine our life without those so willing.

Also reminded of my Grandfather. A veteran himself, he was a rough, tough guy...a carpenter...loved him...had a great sense of humor...didn't really know him then like I do now. My Mom used to tell me about his own pain. His son, Mom's brother, was a B-26 bomber pilot in WWII (68 missions, when 25 was considered the maximum survivable). She said, during the war, she would frequently hear him...in the middle of the night...sitting in the living room and quietly crying to himself....comforted by the beloved family dog (Dinah). A Father's anguish....

I don't forget those who serve...and I definitely don't forget those who sit and wait for theirs to return. Reminds me of the clusterhead supporters...it's a harder job. The Marines are missing a great opportunity with you Brother....

Also can't resist posting this letter attributed to Lincoln...tears me up every time...

Executive Mansion,
Washington, Nov. 21, 1864.

Dear Madam,

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

A. Lincoln

Best, always,

Jon
