Shadow or not
Dec 1st, 2010 at 2:13pm

So, I have a LONG history for clusters.  For the last few days I've had a painful feelign on my scalp, and around my eye/cheek area, on the same side (right) that I get clusters.  I've never felt this before.  It hurts more to the touch, not so much if I don't touch it.
.
Doctor thinks it could be shingles (we have to watch and see) - but someone else suggested it might be a shadow.  My clusters have been coming back as of the last few months.
.
But in all my years of getting hits, I've never had a shadow that lasted all day.  Could this be one?

I've never had a shadow like that. My shadows feel like the beast is trying to dig in, but can't quite get traction. I'll get the droopy eye, the pressure in the ear, but the attack never gets off the gorund.

That being said, CH is so damned random it's possible you are eperiencing a shadow. I haven't had shingles yet so I can't help you there.

Joshua--

Doesn't really sound like a shadow unless you feel the pain also within your head--you know what I mean?  But as far as shadows go, I have gotten some rogue shadows out of cycle--it is only when I wake up with a shadow that I am in trouble and cycle is starting--that's just me--I get the HAs at night.  I would assume the best--think positive.

Hi Josh
I've had the same thing happen after an extended period of heavy shadowing, I would say the feeling in the area is tender to touch rather than hurts & yes when it first happened my Doc suspected shingles but they never came.

Cheers Barry

If the "painful feeling" you talk about is like your scalp is burning, or, it feels like someone has stitched a shoe lace to the inside of your scalp and is tugging on it then you are no orphan there.  I suffer the same discomfort on a daily basis.  It is usually combined with a mild "pressure" behind my eye.  I cant say that either symptom is really painful, more annoying. BUT........once my eye starts to burn.........straight to the O2.
Oh.....you might wanna try a bag of frozen peas or an ice pack on the head to help ease the discomfort. (seriously)

Hope this helps mate Smiley

Like Barry, I've had "tender" scalp areas and if I play around with it too much, I can trigger a headache. Not sure the connection. I did read somewhere that fiddling with one's moustache, or beard (I do both) can trigger a hit, too. For that matter, so can brushing my teeth on the affected side. Gotta love these things. Scratch that, gotta hate these things. God bless! lance

I have shadowed just about everyday for more than a year now and I also have a very tender area on my scalp.  I can't wear my hair up anymore.

I'm thankful that my meds keep me from having big hits.  It would be nice to not feel it lurking all the time though.

Just throwing this out there....tenderness to the eye and cheek area reminds me of a sinus infection.  Were you checked for that?

Joshua,

What you are experiencing is called Cutaneous Allodynia: Pain resulting from an innocuous stimulus to normal skin or scalp...  one of the lesser known, but not uncommon symptoms of the cluster headache syndrome.

I experienced it as well when I was episodic particularly after high Kip-level attacks.  It stopped being a problem when I started using oxygen therapy at flow rates that support hyperventilation.  This method of oxygen therapy works so effectively with very short abort times, the pain of my attacks rarely ever got above a Kip-4 to Kip-5.

Take care,

V/R, Batch
