I love Christmas, always have. It is my favorite time of the year.
My grandparents had four daughters, and they produced 11 grandchildren. Every Christmas (no excuses!) the entire family came to Grandma and PopPop's house and stayed there for at least two to three days. Four bedrooms, one bathroom (unless you want to count PopPops toilet in the basement. People were sleeping on couches, three or four kids to a bed, and quilts and pillows on the floor. Christmas morning, all the adults got to go downstairs, light the tree, make the coffee, while all 11 of us had to wait at the top of the stairs, guarded by mean old Uncle Vaughn, until all the adults had their coffee, land Grandma had put the homemade breakfast rolls into the oven (she had started the turkey the night before).
I continued that little tradition with my two daughters until they were 16 years old! Not down the stairs till the grown ups had their caffeine! My younger daughter hated having to be the only one stuck at the top of the stairs those last two Christmases until she hit "the age". Sorry - it's a tradition. Both my daughters are doing the same with their children- the tradition continues.
My husband, Tarey began a tradition when our girls were toddlers. Daddy took his daughter out to lunch and shopped for her Christmas outfit. Just Daddy and daughter, one at a time - I was not allowed to come along. Both of my daughters are married now with daughters of their own (one each). Their daddies love this tradition and are doing it with their daughters - the tradition continues.
I adore Christmas, and can't wait until this Saturday (18th), because due to work and the other side of the family (in-laws), plus a Christmas wedding, the 18th is the only day that we can all be together. My two precious and precocious granddaughters (both two years old), are coming to this Grandma and Grandpa's house. The stockings are hung!
Yes, Christmas is big business for the retailers, and too many people spend more time and money worrying about what to buy to someone else. That's not important. Being with loved ones is, and remembering what Christmas really is: CHRISTmas.
