Stumbled on a new abortive
Jan 8th, 2011 at 1:29am

I'm a 28 y/o male that has been suffering with CH since I was 16.  It was scary as could be being that age and having no idea what was wrong with me.  The first time I found this website I started crying over the stories on the main page because for the first time I realized I wasn't alone in this.  I've tried everything since then and none of the preventative stuff ever worked, so I've just stuck with abortive.  My pain free periods have gotten longer and longer over the years but of course they always come back...

Now on to what I've stumbled across.  I take the supplement N.O. explode as a pre-workout training supplement.  It is essentially energy in powder form, you mix a couple scoops with water in a shaker bottle and chug it down.  I've tried the sugar free red bull without any consistent results so I decided to try N.O. as an abortive.  And so far, it works!  It has its downsides, but it works.  It will keep you awake and wired, but no more headache after a few minutes of drinking it.  I know they sell single packets at GNC and other health stores, but I now keep a tub ready to go and shaker bottle in my bag so I just have to add water.  I suggest anyone that wants to see if it works for them pick up a few of the single serving packets and try it out.

Maybe, maybe not...

Any idea what is in it? After all, who would have guessed that energy drinks like Red Bull would work? It could have the same ingrediants (caffeine / taurine) that we see in other energy drinks.

From GNC:

Quote:
Before consuming N.O.-XPLODE seek advice from a physician if you are unaware of your current health condition or have any pre-existing medical condition including but not limited to: high or low blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia, stroke, heart, liver, or thyroid disease, anxiety, depression, seizure disorder, psychiatric disease, diabetes, pernicious anemia, difficulty urinating due to prostate enlargement, or if you are taking an MAO inhibitor or any other medication. Do not use if you are contemplating pregnancy, pregnant, nursing, prone to dehydration, or exposed to excessive heat. Reduce or discontinue use if sleeplessness, tremors, dizziness, nervousness, headaches, or heart palpitations occur. Please be aware this product contains the naturally occurring amino acid beta-alanine, which may cause a tingling skin sensation in some individuals similar to niacin flush. This effect should diminish after a few hours and should ultimately subside after days of continuous use. Although rare, individuals with the genetic disorder hyper beta-alaninemia should not use this product. N.O.-XPLODE is only intended to be consumed by healthy adults 18-50 years of age. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Allergen Warning: Manufactured on equipment which processes products containing milk, egg, soybeans, shellfish, wheat, and tree nuts. CAUTION: N.O.-XPLODE is an extreme energy & performance igniter. Use caution when using with any other caffeinated products or if you are caffeine sensitive. Always begin use with 1 scoop or less and assess your tolerance. It is not recommended that you consume more than 3 scoops per day. To avoid sleeplessness, do not consume within 4 hours of bedtime.

It contains a bunch of trace elements and B vitamins, plus something called a "proprietary blend" that isn't explained. Not much info, really. Blessings. lance

Ummm...one more thing for the cause. Not sure why I'm curious about this, perhaps it's because I wouldn't have thought energy drinks could help, but they do. So from another web page:

Quote:
Beta Alanine helps the body synthesize the compound Carnosine, which is most present in muscle tissue and lessens the impact of fatigue and increases the power of the muscles.  But how does this work?  As we exercise, especially in high intensity workouts, positively charged hydrogen atoms (H+) begin to accumulate in the area, causing it to become more acidic.  Lactic acid is also produced because of the metabolism of glycogen, which is a form of energy the body uses.  These two factors cause fatigue and muscle burn.

So how does Carnosine work?  Carnosine works by absorbing stray H+ atoms to help the body maintain its pH balance during an exercise.  There are a number of other buffering systems that help do the same thing, but Carnosine is very powerful.  The more Carnosine is present in the muscles, the more H+ the body is able to absorb, thereby helping to control fatigue and increase the muscles output.

Smarter people than I can help out here. Any relationship to CHs and aborting? lance

6.   Creatine also produces the following NO Xplode side effects: unwanted allergic reactions including swelling of the lips and tongue, heavy breathing, and an uncomfortable constriction of the throat.

Now there is something to look forward to.

Welcome to the board Waide. Intersting stuff, although the side effects are a little worrisome. In my body building days I used to use creatine......learned the hard way that is one arse kicking trigger.  Cheesy

Do stick around and read up a bit on the board. Between oxygen and some of the more effective prevents we've discovered, you may find a few tools to keep in your arsenal against the beast.

Wishing you some pain free times ahead.

Joe

PS: if you're just a salesman, and not a CH sufferer, you should quietly exit, as we don't have much of a tolerance for them! Wink If you truly suffer from CH bookmark this site, you'll not find a more comprehensive knowledge base on CH.

it contains shellfish which I am highly allergic to.  I also can not take it due to high blood pressure and a list a mile long of other conditions.  It sounds like it is a risky concoction to take for anyone including me.

My opinion, for what it's worth, comes after talking to someone very informed in supplements and personal training.  This supplement contains creatine which is very hard on the kidneys and anyone using must be sure to maintain hydration throughout the day.  Also, this supplement is intended to be used once a day as a pre-work out....some sufferers who get hit multiple times a day may think they can use this as many times a day as they get hit....bad idea.  (I thought the same of red bull until it was pointed out to me here not to use more than once a day if taking verapamil).

My point is there is no evidence that this is safe to take for CH, at what quantities it can be taken, what interactions it may have with other medications and/or supplements, other medical conditions you may have, and do the benefits outweigh the risks.  Just want to mention that while supplements are easily accessible at pharmacies and health food stores does not mean they are safe to take (granted some are beneficial..however, I believe they've been proven over long-term use..ie..I'm thinking Jerry's endorsement of Kudzo..I trust his experience with it). If you choose to proceed with this recommendation, do so at your own risk and with caution and always weigh the benefits vs. risk...especially in unchartered territory.  Personally, I'll pass.  JMO

I agree with Lynnae', and I thank you for the kind words.  My support and recommendation came after quite a bit of research and experimentation by Nani and others.  I have just been echoing what I got from others.  As John Newton said, "I stand on the shoulders of giants", but HE actually discovered something.  I just trumpet what others have done.

I understand the concern from most of the replies out there, I have my own but when I feel that shadow coming on my concerns go out the window.  I always tell myself I can make it through this one, only to realize I'm not as strong as I was before the pain started.  I always forget how bad they are when I am pain free.  Unfortunately, I'm in an area with limited support.  I went pain free for over a year and thought I was good to go.  Now here I am, working as a government contractor in Afghanistan (first time as a contractor, I did 8 years active duty military as an EOD tech) and the military hospitals tend to turn their back on contractors that come through the door.

WOW! My hats off to you for your service to us in that country. I thank you.

And I know what you mean, I once stayed on prednisone for almost a year because at the time, all I had for treatment options was lidocaine nose drops, oral cafergot and narcotic pain meds. I knew the prednisone was stupid, but it beat getting hit a couple times a day.

Hoping you catch some pain free time soon, praying you guys stay safe over there.

Joe

First, thank you so very much for your service and now working over in such a dangerous area.  I will be praying for your safety over there.  While I have concerns about the effects of the supplement you're using...I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND doing what you gotta do when being hit. Took matters into our own hands too when getting hit hard (not so much for just shadows though).   I also now get your resources are limited (where can get NO in Afghanistan?  Maybe u have it sent to u?)..Being in that environment PLEASE make sure you are hydrated more than others...as I mentioned before this supplement is very hard on the kidneys and dehyrdation is a problem with regular use of it, so your use would call for extreme dehyrdation.  Don't want the ole kidneys to shut down on you.  Anyway, take care and I wish you PF.

Reported melatonin side effects include headaches, nausea, depression, nightmares and vivid dreams, irritability, abdominal cramps and dizziness.

That little bit of info right there kept me from using melatonin for about 2 years......... wish I had disregarded it......

I apologize, bwaide. Your 1st post sounded to me like you had read a magazine article about CH and were using what you learned in it to tout your new CH cure. I shouldn't have been so quick to judge. I'm sorry your location limits your resources to fight your pain and understand that you're doing the best you can with what you got. Thank you for your service to our country and please stay safe over there. Please check in here once in awhile as new therapies appear all the time and you might find something more effective and less destructive than what you're now using. Ron
