Steroids and Phylactiocs
Jan 21st, 2011 at 9:21am

Hi Old timers,

I saw the Nuero yesterday. He reckons that Im getting pretty near the end of my current cycle (ticker tapes, champagne, balloons etc). What he has done is write to my local gp and say that if there is another cycle he would want me to try Steroids and Phylatics rather than imitrex / sumatritan.

Anyone come across this before?

Steroids, like prednisone, I understand.  A prednisone taper is often used in the short term as a transitional medication to halt attacks until a longer-term preventive, such as verapamil, has time to begin working.

I don't know what phylatics are.   Huh

Best,

George

Could he have said prophylactics, (sp?) as in preventative treatments? I use lithium as my prevent, but it takes 10-14 days to reach a therapeudic level. So I do a 14 day prednisone taper, to get me thru the first few weeks. For a lucky small percentage of CH'ers, a prednisone taper will halt an entire cycle.

I'm all for dumping the trex as I'm convinced, as are several other members of this board, that trex extends cycles. No scientific studies to back that, just personel experience. I would push for the steroid taper, with a preventative such as verapamil, and then get him to prescribe the oxygen for your abortives. It's sure reduced the beasts power over my life!

I'll occasionally pop an excederin migrain for those nasty  shadows. I stress the occasionally as repeated use just causes rebounds.

4way nasal spray, that's the brand name, also helps me with shadows. A good snort up the nostril of the affected side. Have you tried strong coffee, or better yet an energy drink with caffiene and tauring, like monster or red bull? They help me with attacks and with shadows.

Hi Brew,

Bin - short for Dustbin, according to google translate English to American = Trashcan or Trash.

I agree Caffeine is definitely good for Shadows. But how about a full blown CH, does pounding an energy drink or something full of caffeine have any effect on it?

Those who have success aborting/reducing attacks with energy drinks seem to get the best result from slamming them down at the first sign of an attack. Once an attack gets established, I have trouble beating them back, even with oxygen. If an attack gets above a 6 or 7, imitrex injectable is about the only thing that'l l provide relief. The trick seems to be catching it before it starts to ramp up the kip scale.
