Question re Red Bull
Jan 22nd, 2011 at 9:07pm

Hi, me again!!

I have a question about Red Bull.

Do you need to drink it at the beginning of an attack for it to work? And how much do you drink??

I had a REALLY late night last night - fortunately it was not from the headaches, although I was getting some Kip 3s on and off after about 9pm. My kids woke me at about 8am, and I had a shocking, shocking headache (6-7). It was not a sleep-deprived headache, it was one of my nasties (which I don't know yet if they are CH).

Anyway, I was so stuffed from lack of sleep that I just kept trying to get back to sleep, with not much luck. (which was somewhat to do with the kids, and a lot to do with the headache).

After about an hour or so, I finally got up and drank a Red Bull. So the headache had been going for ages already, and the Red Bull seemed to have no effect. (However, it did give me the get-up-and-go that I needed to get out of bed!) The headache lasted about another hour.

Was it too late by then to have any effect anyway, even if it is CH that I'm getting?

For most, it needs to be chugged, FAST, at the first sign of an attack, to have any chance of aborting or reducing a hit. It's like oxygen, if I let the beast get a good foothold before I start the 02, I can somewhat reduce the attack but won't be able to kill it. If I start the 02 at the first hint, in 6-8 minutes I'm generally pain free.

I use mine combined with oxygen. An attack starts, I start huffing 02, my wife grabs me a 12 oz red bull. I chug the red bull in between breaths. It seems to speed the abort time, and more importantly for me, seems to prevent the come backer attacks for several hours.

Yes.  A whole can, or...you can get one of those very small bottles of energy drinks that are a little bit more expensive, but easier to chug.  They are more concentrated and more travel friendly.  Just make sure they have taurine as well as caffeine in them.

Don't wait for the headache to get full-blown.  Take it immediately!

Thank you again! I'll be seeing my doctor on Tues, so I can talk to him about the headaches and o2 then.

My biggest problem with the Red Bull will be that a lot of my headaches only get to a 4 or 5, so I don't want to waste it on short ones of those... but it's only in hindsight that you know how bad they will get, and by then the window might have closed!

Anyway, thanks again for your advice!

I had a can of Red Bull this afternoon when I felt a headache coming on. It was about 25 minutes before the headache was gone, so I wasn't sure if it was just a short headache that the red bull did nothing for, or if I'd killed off a biggie.

BUT - it's now nearly 1am and I have not had a single inkling of a headache since. Night time (while I am awake) is usually when I get the most pain so this is VERY different for me.

Would the effect of the Red Bull usually last that long? It was about 6.30pm when I drank it

Red bull will keep the beast at bay for me for several hours, but not for over 12 hours. That's another reason to keep a diary as we all react so differently to everything. Charting the time between headaches with, and without the red bull might give you an idea of how long it keeps beasty away.

I think its a matter of your CH cycle rather than the Red Bull. In my case, it tends to work on the current, or present, CH. Perhaps it has to do with what Joe said previously: not letting the beast get a grip on you. CHs tend to build in intensity and frequency if not aborted rather quickly. Yes, they can be pricey, but nowhere near as expensive as trex. Blessings. lance
