Other Weird Side Effects of CH's???
Feb 26th, 2011 at 2:23pm

I would like to know if any of you also have these symptoms or side effects of CH's as I do.

I have acquired a deep crease between my eyes from squinting during an attack.  It has gotten worse over the last 2 years.  Is this common?

The day after a CH or migraine attack, there is a noticeably change in my personality.  I could cry or get angry in a heartbeat.  I also feel more silly and do things that are out of character for me.  Am I the only one?

Thanks for your replies!

I wish I could be more silly! I become sullen.  Though this cycle I've become more hopeful because of all the help I've gotten from this message board and everyone on it!

However, during this cycle, I did notice that I'm making more mistakes than usual while typing. Smiley

Hi Glassman

I get the whole angry side of it. Scarily angry. How long have you had to put up with that specific feeling? I'm just a pup compared to other people here, i'd really appreciate hearing how you tame 'the beast', especially when you feel the way you explained.

Thanks in advance

I've had that crease between the eyes for over 30 yrs, and I blame CH for it.  Mood swings are not unusual at all for clusterheads, although I usually get them as a precursor to an attack rather than after.

It sounds like you've got a faulty keyboard, just like mine. It's a poor speller too (nothing to do with the user of course).

Of course you have mood swings...pain will do that. So will the anticipation of pain. And I am always amazed after a big hit how my eye, previously so swollen and runny, looks quite normal after an attack. It just doesn't seem fair.

In some circles, among those who study facial response to emotional reaction, those vertical lines are called "try hard" lines. Pretty common among even those who do not have CHs. Such "drivers" are a tell if you know what to look for. Blessings. lance

Whimsy, that is so interesting to know about "try hard" lines!  Never heard of that term, but makes sense to me.

I guess I associated my vertical line with my headache becuase during one, my forehead above my right eye bunches up so painfully starting at this "try hard" line.  It is stuck there for about an hour until it subsides...I guess my eye is "trying hard" not to explode as it feel it might! Shocked

The day after an attack I am vague and forgetful and find it impossible to concentrate, suppose I can put some of that down to disturbed sleep.

SpringThyme,

According to the experts in the pathophysiology of the cluster headache there are a lot of fluctuations in the levels of neruotransmitters, hormones, enzymes and chemical messengers in a cocktail of neurochemicals during and after a cluster headache.  These include: endorphins, dopamine, serotonin, epinephrine (adrenalin), norepinephrine (noradrenalin), eicosanoids, cytokines, and the list goes on.

The following graphic from the Neurology department at NIH might help explain part of the mood swings associated with cluster headaches.

I've worked with several CH'ers over Skype and observed some go into a catatonic trance moments before an attack then giggle uncontrollably after an abort with oxygen therapy.

My wife can spot a CH coming long before I do and starts telling me to get on the oxygen...  She also claims I'm more sociable and relaxed after an abort with oxygen therapy.  In the early years before I started oxygen therapy, I'd usually end up like a soup sandwich after an attack then drift off to sleep.

Take care,

V/R, Batch

That was a great example of what seems to be going on in the old brain!  I get that for sure.

Batch, you said something really interesting! During the later stages of my hospital visit when i was on o2, i went all, well, childish. I'm a naturally playful peson anyway but apparently i was becoming increasingly full of life. I'm not sure if this was a reaction to the oxygen or whether i was glad to be rid of the pain. I went home scared of the next one but, for the few hours i was in the emergency room, i felt really, really good. Has that ever been the same for you, or have i completely missed your point?

The last time I had to do O2 was the first time I was able to do 15 LPM (jerk doctor thought that was too dangerous and kept me at 8 most of my cycle but at least that did work). Anyway, after my 15 LPM I was fairly much EUPHORIC!!  Smiley  I put it down to the higher O2 intake but maybe I was wrong....

Hey Glassman,

I can tell you for a fact that 30 to 40 liters/minute and up to 60 liters/minute is even better and VERY SAFE!  As an old US Navy fighter pilot with over 3,000 hours flying Navy Fighters breathing 100% oxygen from takeoff to landing on every flight, there is no problem breathing 100% oxygen at these flow rates!

I've been in Dog Fights and missions over Hanoi during Operation Linebacker I and II where I sucked down 100% oxygen up to 40 and 50 liters/minute until I had to "BUG OUT" back to the ship to get more ammo....  I'm still here 38 years later at age 67... and doing just fine thank you..

Moreover, Navy and Marine Corps pilots flying tactical fixed-wing aircraft have been doing this since 1942 and the Navy still makes today's pilots do the same thing while flying $30M to $40M dollar jets on every flight...  day and night off aircraft carriers!  If that doesn't tell you anything... like it's VERY SAFE... think again.  Even the astronauts on the Space Shuttle as I make this post, breathe 100% oxygen when doing EVA's in their space suits and if you listen closely, you can tell they're sucking down that oxygen like big dogs!!!

'Think they'd do that if it wasn't very safe?

Crank your oxygen regulator up to the max and if that's less than 25 liters/minute... You gotta get a bigger regulator capable of at least 25 liters/minute or better yet, 0 to 60 liters/minute... and that's a fact Jack!

Flotec Inc. at the following link has the only 0-60 liter/minute regulators here in the US today...  They're great and I've used mine for over 5 years!

I get that euphoric high too after an 02 abort...interesting...I also assumed it was just the joy of knowing beasty wasn't digging in.

Hey Batch,
You've lead a very interesting life!
It's on my list to get a 0-60 regulator this week. I got your information on that and want to thank you again for all your help.

As an aside, I've always loved the space program and one of my favorite youtube videos is the Saturn V launch viewed by high speed cameras.  Here's the link:

I'm glad someone has brought this up. About 2 weeks prior to episodes I become very irritable. The smallest thing can set me off, and I know something isn't right. I develop a lot of anxiety that isn't normal for me but I am aware of it, just can't control it like I would like. Now when this happens I know what is coming.

I ehco Batch's statement about the Mrs. seeing a cluster before I even know.

In my ongoing battle with the "Cycle That Wouldn't Die", my fall cycle that actual began in August is STILL kickin. Just yesterday, I walk into the living room and my wife says "Uh oh. You have a headache, don't you?"

Of course, I said, "No", because I didn't or at least I didn't think I did. Then I looked in the mirror. My eye was halfway shut, blood red and watery. Within 5 minutes...bam!!

My biggest side effect is the pain in my neck and jaw line on my affected side. In the aftermath of cluster bomb, presumably from increased tension (and that I have a tendancy to grind my teeth), I have a great deal of discomfort on my right side.

Now, when the cycle passes, I feel as if the right side of my face and head is liberated. I can't really describe the feeling except it's like an immense pressure just lifting from my head. Shortly thereafter, I have an inexplicable craving for red meat!!  Smiley

Hey!!  Smiley
I too have had an inexplicable craving for red meat this cycle... just can't get enough. Even went so far as to really splurge and in the last week of this current cycle twice I made for dinner big red juicy medium rare filet mignon drizzled with port wine reduction sauce (I'm an enthusiastic home chef).  Also lamb, been craving that more than usual as well - lamb chops, braised lamb shoulder. Also had a craving for Beef Wellington (my mom used to make that) but it's more work than I cared to expend.

Anybody else have odd food cravings?

I'm not sure what I would call my mood swings.  Often, prior to a hit, I feel really really good.  If I'm out, I am having a great time.  Then there is an urge to be alone  - this is about when my wife recognizes something is amiss.  And then my head explodes.

If I'm home, I don't recognize this as much, since I'm not around others.

I had one weird cycle where I went through most of the same symptoms, but with very little pain.  Just six weeks or so of shadows.
