Good wishes and hopes for all affected by this devastating event--apparently, the fifth most-powerful quake since 1900.  My condolences to those who have lost loved ones.

I'm glad to hear that the tsunami warning system set up along the Pacific Rim seems to have reduced the human cost in areas far from the epicenter--but of course, it could not help those on the nearby coastline.

We do have a few members here who reside in Japan--if they are able to respond, or happen to see this post, I hope they will let us know that they are okay.

All the best,

George

New Zealand is under alert as well.  Tidal waves bashed Hawaii in the 60's when Alaska cracked.  Japan's quake is terribly larger.

Real bad.

Subduction plate movement.

It was simply incredible watching the news reports last night. It just didn't seem that something of that scale was really happening and it wasn't some special effects for a film.

I expect that the various international search and rescue teams will be flying out from Christchurch today to head up to Japan.

NZ was hit by the wave but it was well under a metre high with most places it being only 20cm or so, arriving about low tide too.

I've not seen one this bad in Japan. I certainly don't remember one in Christchurch for that matter.

The Pacific rim is taking a helluva beating. The pictures of this thing are a horror show. The think looks apocolypitc.
