Hi CH! 'Nother Newbee

'Ello everyone. I'm Mike, and I've been fighting the Demon again lately. I'm mid 40's, and live about 35 miles N/W of Austin, TX. I've had Clusters most of my life, at least that as I can remember, but it's been a while sense they have haunted me like they have lately. I can almost set a clock by them the last couple of weeks. 2-3 hours of sleep, regardless of the time of day or night, and I wake knowing it's on it's way.

Anyways- I'll write more when I can actually see the monitor, I just wanna curl up into a ball and bawl for the moment, and the monitor isn't helping at ALL!

I did want to drop you a line, let you know I was here, and introduce myself. I'm glad I stumbled onto this place and am looking forward to surfing through the forums when the little man with the jack hammer has vacated my head.

Hi Mike
Welcome to the site
This place is full of fab advice and support,
no question too silly!

I have only been around since Jan and have gained sooo much knowledge, for me though its the support  and knowing I'm not alone.
Unless you actually experience the pain its very difficult to understand and appreciate but on here people DO understand.

Some much more knowledgeable people will be along soon,
Take care and here's to being PF

Like 37-41, I've been on since January though I've visited the board on and off for over 4 years now (last cycle).  This is the best place to find help and encouragement.
When you're pain free let (and I hope that's soon!) us know more about you!

Thanks for all the kind welcomes everyone. Mostly PF at the moment. Here's a little more about me.

Have had clusters most of my life, sense about 7, though only really figured out what they were ohhh..... in the last 5-7 years?

Definitely periodic, however during those periods, it's pretty chronic.  I'll admit that my current round, about 3 weeks now, I believe is stress related. Having all kinds of crapage going on lately. Wife has been pretty sick, and was undiagnosed for some time, though we finally found a doctor worth her weight in salt, and found that she has Graves compounded with type 2 diabetes. That was sure a kicker. Then to top that off, just after the diagnoses, the economy catches up with me and I got laid off from my DREAM JOB. But so is life. (That'll be 6 months ago tomorrow) PLEASE, no sympathy for that one, I'm no different than any of the other millions in the same boat right now.....

I was lucky and went PF for quite a few years recently, I'd guess at 6 or so, with only the occasional sinus or stress headache, but nothing major, then about 3 weeks ago the demons returned.

So- what works? Vicodin! Doesn't really stop the pain, but sure makes me not care  Cheesy Haven't ever really found a Med combination that does any good, however lately I have had good luck with alternating between hot and cold compresses at about 3-5 minute intervals. And soaking in a tub hot enough to make me look like a lobster helps me relax through it as well.
Oh ya, COFFEE helps a LOT, must be the caffeine.

Not sure what else to add at the moment, if you have anything you wanna know, feel free to ask, I'm a pretty open person. Like I said in my 1st post. Glad I found this place, it's just nice to be able to type to people that understand how it feels, my wife tries bless her heart, but never having gone through it, she just doesn't understand.

Like so many people who stunble onto the board, you're in the dark ages for treatment! There is so much available now to help manage beasty and keep him in his place.

Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Start here. I'm 51, a 33 year CH'er, and nothing has evened the playing field with the beast like oxygen has. I feel the familiar tension in the neck, the pain starts to build, I start huffing 02 and 6-8 minutes later I'm pain free. Understand since you're out of work money might be tight, pay close attention to the welding oxygen section of that link. Same stuff as the medical tanks, only cheaper!

Then check out this link. Your neighbor, Dallas Denny, is one of the bigger proponents for these "alternate" therapies. They are outside of mainstream medicine, and have really helped some of our tougher cases.

If caffiene works well for you, try energy drinks. Rock Star, Monster, any containing the combo of caffiene and taurine. The taurine kind of turbo charges the caffiene. Chugged at the first sign of an attack, many can abort or reduce an attack.

An over the counter sleep aid, melatonin, start with 10 mg about 30 minutes before bedtime. Many can avoid the wake up hits that way. Be patient, takes a couple days to become effective for some.

Then stick around and start reading like a madman. Knowledge is power against the beast. Careful with the vicodain, doesn't do much against the beast and the risks associated with it are high! Wink

Welcome home.

Joe

Edited to add....go to the medications section..."123 pain free days and i think I know why"...it's a daily supplement of high doses of vitamon D-3, along with some other otc stuff......it's producing some pretty impressive results, certainly worth a read.

Much better painkillers available on here than 5.56mm....
Just pull up a chair and read up, your'e very welcome!

A lot has changed since you were first diagnosed M, THE holy grail of CH is now O2.
Read the link on the left, this WILL change your life for the better...accept NO substitute from the medical 'Profession'....

Thanks so much Gary, we truly are blessed with the help we've had from friends and family through her ordeal. And quite honestly, I feel a little like a Dumb A$$ at the moment. When she was 1st diagnosed with Graves, a couple of years before the diabetes, 1st thing I did was jump up on a Graves support site and the moral support I received, not to even mention the Graves support, was just unbelievable. But when it came to getting some external support for my Demons, the thought never even crossed my mind. (Something about hind site being 2020 seems appropriate here)

Between my endless hours sifting through the want ads today, I read through some of the links Guiseppi shared, and I am very interested in getting started in some of the alternative treatments I've read about. This is also insight gained by my wifes bout with Graves.

Oddly enough, one additional treatment I forgot to mention, and thanks to you again for reminding me with your 5.56 reference, when I can afford trips to the firing range, throwing a few rounds from my 7.62x54 seems to help my cluster headaches as well. I'm thinking this must be associated with the adrenalin kick that comes with it, just a guess, but it really does help.

Thanks again to everyone for all the encouraging words, and the personal emails that I have yet to respond to. They are SOOO much appreciated.

Mike.

Big Bore Rush, Heavy Metal....

Sorry Mr K, lost the plot there!

Moral support..I really think this is what the internet is for!
As we have seen, it can shatter beliefs, bring governments down (please don't start me)

Communication, one day I hope, people will type in 'headache' and Goggle will send them here or,
automatically forward them to 'its only just a fuckinheadcache.com'...
WE really are getting somewhere with this community/board/Family....

I put a comment on here about the UK version of this site 'OUCH UK'.... stroppy Val came down on me like a ton of bricks, I apologised and she sent me 2 brochures on CH treatment, I am now giving one to my New CH clued up GP....And Val and me are trying to decide what to call our kids...
NO only joking!

Mike 7.62x54 Pah! Check out Dillon Aero.. Lottery win, I am straight in that Huey!
