The Names.....
Mar 28th, 2011 at 8:18pm

...in sports....that delight me. I have a fascination with words...my Father's legacy...these are some NAMES that do the same....I LOVE those that just ro-l-l-l-l-l-l-l off the tongue....

Herbie Nyukpuk (Ni-yuck-puck): Native Alaskan dog musher. A Father of the Iditarod..he never won..but was so classy and determined...EVERYONE in Alaska rooted for Herbie. And THAT name....yup...

Merritt Ranew (Ray-new): A Seattle Angels catcher in the 1960's. Couple of cups of coffee in the bigs...tough guy...played the way it should be done....

Rollie Storbakken (Store-bak-in): A bowling ball with legs...and quick...you didn't tackle Rollie, you bounced him around until there was no place else to go. Think a couple of other "bowling balls" like Norm Bulaich (Boo-lash) and Don Nottingham...great names and players too...

Mark Roetcisoender: Another high school classmate...try to say that name before I tell you...coach called him "alphabet". It's root-si-son-der.

Roman Gabriel: Is that a great name for a QB or what!?!?... then there's  Johnny Unitas, or Sammy Baugh, or Sonny Jurgenson, or Y.A. Title....or Sonny Sixkiller!

Cool Papa Bell: Who wouldn't want THAT name? I don't even remember his real first name. Satchel Paige...in the best named book ever..."Only The Ball Was White" (a history of the Negro leagues)...said...Cool Papa was SO fast...he could turn off the lights and be in bed before it got dark......

A decidedly personal list...there are many more...care to share yours?

Best,

Jon

Seen in one officer's mess - Major Slaughter.

However it was a REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) and not an infantry unit.

I needed to rent a car for a couple days, so called a company with a small office nearby.  A young girl answers and drives out to pick me up.  We get back to the office and fill out paperwork at the counter.  Nice girl, long brunette hair, brown eyes, kind of svelte in a black dress and blazer typing away.

I glance to the side of the counter, she's got cards in a cardholder. I see her name, it's Angel Porn.

I take a card.

If I was fourteen I wonder how long before I'd forget.  It took a week.

My maiden name is Fannin.

My mother told me that she had wanted to name me Faye Fannie.  I was named Sandra Sue.

Thank you Daddy!

A podiatrist and a chiropractor shared office space in Oswego a few years ago.  One's name was Tyckle and the other was Foote.  I'm not sure any more which one was which.

Our former police chief who just retired: Rex Rater.

Sounds like a 40s western serial to me.

I dated a guy in high school,  his last name was Tuch.....pronounced TUSH.......he had an uncle named Harry-a proctologist, no less...... Uncle Harry had a boat called The Leaky( might still be in Marina del Rey for all I know)...... this guy, if we had married and  had children, had every intention of naming his firstborn child OPHELIA......and that's why I married Gil! Cheesy
