Question about Oxygen
Apr 2nd, 2011 at 1:28am

My husband has emphysema and has oxygen canisters, accumulators canulas and regulators.  But 5 is as high as any of the register.  From what I've read here, the oxygen we use should be set a lot higher.  Do you get your oxygen from  a special place that offers higher lpm?  Also, I have to use a regular canula since that's all I have available to me.  But even at 5 with a canula it does seem to reduce the pain some for me.

Thanks everyone for reading!

You can usually find a high flow reg on eBay for a resonable price......and the ch.com store sells an excellent mask.

If you're getting some relief from 5lpm and nose canulas, you'll get significantly better results with a higher flow rate regulator and a proper non-rebreather mask.

The oxygen itself is exactly the same, so just a case of getting his and hers kit to use it.

Like you, I found any O2 better than pacing the neighborhood.  I had used O2 successfully in the past, but moved.  The doc here wanted to try just a little (why???), and it did help a little.  But he gas guy even said it was the wrong thing for CH.  I ordered a rebreather mask pronto and went back to what the previous doc had done with good results.  Since then, I found a new doc.

Even though I'm a pretty big guy, I find that I can relax with the O2, and 7lpm is about right.  The hose fills up the bag constantly, and the bag fills up for each breath.  Works like a champ, but we are all different.  Read up on the oxygen info.  I hope it works as well for you, too.

Various companies like Linde and Lifegas sell both the regulators and the masks...and as some have found, they are also available (apparently) on the internet (Ebay and such). I agree with the above posters: if you're getting relief from a 5lpm nasal canula, you're gonna love the full treatment of high flow O2 and a non-rebreather mask! Blessings. lance
