Hello everyone,
I'm a new member of CH.com. I've read a few posts here and there since I first started experiencing clusters 10 years ago, but haven't registered to share anything until now.
Last summer I was in a cycle for about 6 weeks until I went to see a teacher of Ayurveda (traditional medicine of India) in Sebastipol, CA. I basically explained my situation to her and a few other practitioners and students - the headaches, frequency, pain level, triggers, everything about them that I had experienced over the past 10 years. After she read my pulse in three places on each wrist while asking me several questions about my lifestyle and body type she concluded that my body was simply overheating and becoming very dehydrated when the weather outside got warmer. She explained that I had a lot of fire inside me and when it got hot out near the summer months, the fire in my body rose, just like it would in a house, and when it reached my head, with nowhere else to go, it would manifest itself in a headache. This was far too simple/too strange of an explanation as to why I was experiencing these daily headaches that made me want to stop living. But as I'm sure many of you know, when you've been experiencing clusters for a while and nothing that you try seems to work, you're pretty much open to try or believe anything/anyone. So, I did as she said to do, and since day one of me following her remedies I have not had a single headache.
So...she told me to do a few things daily that would help my body retain it's moisture, stay better hydrated, and keep itself cool and better lubricated (more on this later).
1st. Every morning I drink a full cup of salt water, using non-iodized salt, usually grey celtic sea salt that clumps together and is wetter than pink himalayan salt. I do this before I eat or drink anything else, especially coffee which will dehydrate you. This activates my kidneys and makes them function more efficiently throughout the day.
It's also a good idea to drink water with lemon in it for alkalizing purposes. This can be a substitute for salt water.
2nd. Throughout the day I drink water with chia seeds in it. Chia seeds (yes like chia pets) are these little reptilian-egg-looking things that are great at hanging on to moisture. You put them in water and after a few minutes they begin to form a globule around them. They literally look like they are glowing. Before when I would drink lots of water in the warmer summer months, I would pee it out very quickly, which meant that my body was not retaining the moisture of the water, but now as I ingest the chia seeds in water, my body retains the water it intakes and I stay better hydrated.
note - I am a very hot person, my body heat is always warm, I sweat at night if it's the least bit warm, and I am generally a firey person. This also lines up with the fact that she told me I have a lot of fire inside of me. The basis of Ayurveda links body types to elements, Fire, Earth, Air, Ether, Water.
3rd. Now this one is a bit strange, I know, but I've been doing it, and it's been working so I keep doing it.
Every night during warm to hot months I put three drops of untoasted, organic sesame oil in my ears and one drop of castor oil in each eye right before I go to bed. The ears I do one at a time, let the oil drip down my ear canal until it hits a point where it literally feels like someone extinguishes a candle wick with wet fingers, then I drain it onto a towel and do the other. Caster oil is very gunky, and kinda gross, so you won't want to do anything but keep your eyes closed and sleep after you put a drop in each eye. The point of this is "to lubricate your upper channels." I'm not quite sure what this means, but like I said, it works so I do it. I did notice that before doing this, I had creaky joints when stretching or doing pushups, and after a few days of "lubricating my upper channels," I creaked no more.
So that's it. Salt water in the mornings, sometimes lemon water, chia seeds in my drinking water, sesame oil in my ears at night and caster oil in my eyes. It's only been 8 months but so far so good, and like I said before, my cycle stopped dead in it's tracks since day one of these rituals. I hope more than anything that this might help someone out there, I know far too well how life-stopping these headaches are, and wish everyone the best in finding their relief, temporarily and permanently.
In solidarity,
dan
