Utah Speeding Ticket
Aug 24th, 2011 at 3:00am

So I was on my way back to Las Vegas from a vacation in Colorado cruising along at 91 mph on a lonely desert highway through Utah and a state trooper hidden behind on a large bush raced behind me and wrote me a speeding ticket.

The ticket was for $115 bucks.

A few days later, I called the court phone # printed on my ticket and asked when I need to have it paid by to avoid a warrant.  The judge personally answered the phone and asked if I could pay it within two weeks and I said sure.  He then asked me how was my driving record and told him it was perfect until now.  He said "enclose an additional $25 bucks and we will reduce it to a parking ticket and you will get no points on your record".

Although I am pleased about not ruining my perfect driving record, I feel as if this Utah court judge is a scam artist and will pocket the $25.

Amazing how the judicial system works in Utah, huh?

Just an opinion, but...

The judge personally answered the phone

What, metered parking on the desert shoulder?  Bring quarters otherwise it's $140.00 parking fine.

A judge agreeing to plea bargaining usually reduces the crime and fine.  Reducing to a parking ticket could also reduce the fine to forty bucks or so.  A real scam artist would pocket the rest.  Utah still keeps the $115.

15 - 20mph over is usually more than that.  I'd deal, but this system could definitely work against someone, too.

I know things are tough but it looks to me like the one deserving a ticket is the "judge."

I don't know if this works in the States but it does here in OZ.

Send them a cheque for $116; you will have over paid the fine & they will have to send you a refund cheque of $1, don't ever cash the cheque because a points penalty cant be administered until such time as all financial transactions have been completed.
The state is happy to get the money, you keep your points & the Judge misses out. Wink

Cheers
