Polk deputies arrest clumsy beer thief

LAKE WALES - The thief was caught on a security camera when his pants fell down as he fled with his arms full
of two cases of Bud Light beer from the E-Z Food Store at 15 Acuff Road.

That was in April.

On Wednesday, Polk County Sheriff's deputies arrested the man they think is the "clumsy beer thief."
Deputies believe Juan Luis Gutierrez, 27, of 2986 Spring Lake Road in Lake Wales, is the same man caught
on surveillance video April 27 as he ran from E-Z Food Store.

The man tripped and fell over his baggy pants that had slipped down his legs. As he fell, he dropped the beer,
much of which exploded out of the cans onto the parking lot.
The man then jumped into the backseat of a waiting black Chevy Malibu - with dark tinted windows and no tag - that fled the scene.

The video was posted on the Sheriff's Office YouTube and Facebook accounts in an effort to find the suspects.
The video gained national attention after being re-posted by Internet users.

Deputies spotted that vehicle on Aug. 16 while on another call in the Lake Wales area.
Those deputies wrote down the tag number and gave it to the deputies assigned to the beer theft case.

According to arrest affidavits, detectives spoke to the car's owner last Thursday.
She said she had loaned her car to Gutierrez and Angel Miguel Ortiz, 22, of 430 Winston Ave. in Lake Wales, to "go and get some beer."
When they returned without the beer, Ortiz told her that Gutierrez had fallen down and "lost" the beer.

Deputies arrested Gutierrez and Ortiz on Wednesday and charged each with petty theft.
As of 3 p.m. Wednesday, Ortiz has been released from the Polk County Jail on $250 bond.

Gutierrez's jail record had not been posted as of Wednesday evening.
