How I got rid of my Cluster Headaches
Nov 20th, 2011 at 10:58pm

I have never posted a message online before but thought this was sufficiently important to tell others about.  My story is the usual one.  I started getting CHs 12 years ago out of the blue.  It went undiagnosed for years where i thought i was nuts since i saw every doctor and specialist you can imagine.  About 5 years ago i finally saw a doctor who had a brain who diagnosed the condition accurately.  I get CHs once or twice per year and they last for about 8 weeks with about 4 attacks per day/night.  I read everything i could on it trying to get some relieve and i have done all the usual therapies.  Oxygen, imitrex injections etc.  I must say that the imitrex injections were a life saver, otherwise nothing else worked for me.  I started a new cycle about 4 weeks ago.  Saw the MD and got the drugs.  This creates a bit of a problem though since my insurance will only cover 1 p week, otherwise cash.  Gets a wee bit pricy.  I had to come up with some sort of solution that was not going to put me in bankruptsy court.  I thought it was curious that although I would get some during the day that were relatively minor, it was the night ones that were killing me.  And my first instinct from the beginning was to get up immediately, don't lay down.  Soo...  I went to see my chiropractor who is also a friend.  He does muscle testing.  I told him about this observation and asked him to check my body sitting up and compare it against laying down and tell me whats different.  Even though i am in the middle of a cycle at that time i was not experiencing a CH and was feeling fine.  He checked everything sitting up and it all came up strong.  He then had me lay down on the table and lifted the back end of the table for about 10 seconds so that my feet were higher then my head and checked my body again.  Everything came back as before except my lymph system was  extremy weak. Hmmmmm. This was interesting to me.  He did this thing where he kind of "jump started" the lymph system, gave me a supplement called "spanish black radish" and told me to take 2 when i got up and 2 before going to bed.  He also made me promise to drink 1 bottle of water throughout the day.  He would have liked me to take more but im a lost cause when it comes to water.  The then told me to sleep sitting up for the next 2 days.  I did what he asked me to do and had no headache that night, and the following night, went back to my own bed, no headache.  I was completely symptom free for one week.  Then i got cocky, stopped drinking water and taking the stuff and boom, hello, headaches back again.  I went crawling back to him, fessed up and we started over.  No headaches.  I'm being a good girl now.  It was interesting to me that the lymph nodes behind my ears were swollen and i had already observed this from previous cycles.  They always were.  Because i dont drink water and think green food is probably toxic - my bowels dont move super great.  He told me just to take 1000 mg magnesium for this before i go to bed.  Before you start wondering why im talking about my bowels, its an important part of it as it keeps my body from becoming toxic since the problem for me was solved by flushing the lymphs.  Anyway, hope it helps.

Welcome to the board. I am not qualified to comment on your treatment plan as a whole, but I will give you my observations piece meal! Wink

Sitting up helps a lot of people get more sleep during high cycle periods. Glad it's providing you with a little more rest.

Magnesium supplements are a common prophylactic treatment for CH. Go to the medications section of this board, and read the post "123 pain free days and i think I know why" It's a daily vitamin/mineral/anti inflammatory supplement, which includes magnesium, that's been providing a lot of relief for people.

Read this link regarding your water intake. Increasing it could prove very beneficial to you:

Read this link to see how to get up to three aborts from every imitrex stat dose:

I did some research on the spanish black radish and the only reference I found to CH was on some chiropractic sites, an example:

HEADACHES, CLUSTER
Every 15 minutes, until abated:
2 Cataplex D
5 Spanish Black Radish
5 Antronex
The Incontinent Bladder Reflex is most often the cause. Test and treat this accordingly

I have never heard of anything like this for CH, but am not one to immediately dismiss it either. I caution you on a couple of levels. Your treatment plan didn't include any prevent medications, verapamil, topomax, lithium etc., which makes me think you're not dealing with someone fluent in treating CH. Spend some time on this board reading up on the more common prevent meds used here.

I say all that because establishing cause and effect with CH can be tricky. I gave up coffee and it "cured" my CH. They stopped completely. Alleluia I'd found my cure. Whoops, 3 months later another cycle started. Maybe what the Chiropractor did with the adjustments, the medications etc., has stopped your cycle. maybe it was about to stop anyways. Time will tell. It never hurts to be over educated when it comes to CH.

"Somebody had to say it" is usually a piss poor excuse to be mean.
