Sibelium and weight gain
Feb 15th, 2012 at 11:24am

Hi clusterheads

Am back from yet another day with the doctor and have yet another cocktail of drugs to try. Now this may seem trivial to some but it's not to me so has anyone else found that they gained much weight with this drug it is listed as a main side effect and I am not really vain its just that I have tried really hard to get my weight down to where I am and I don't want it to balloon out of control on some drug that may not even work (pretty much everything else hasn't!)

Again I don't need people telling me that if it controls the pain I should get over the weight gain I just want a honest answer as to what I can expect

Thanks and hope all are keeping 100% better than my aching head! Cry

This is not a U.S. brand name and no citations on it's use in U.S. medical literature which I could findd with a quick scan.

Abstract
The clinical use of calcium antagonists (Ca-antagonists) in neurological diseases focuses on 2 main therapeutic fields: (a) For the therapy of migraine flunarizine is the first choice therapy and nimodipine is a second line treatment. WITH VERAPAMIL CLUSTER HEADACHE CAN BE TREATED SUCCESSFULLY, FLUNARIZINE SHOWS LESS IMPRESSIVE CLINICAL EFFICACY. The therapy with flunarizine may be restricted due to the incidence of extrapyramidal disturbances and depressions as known side effects. (b) The therapy of clinical conditions after subarachnoidal bleeding with nimodipine is well established. In the therapy of acute cerebral ischemia the therapeutic efficacy of nimodipine administered orally is not therapeutically proved until now; the intravenous administration of nimodipine offers the risk of acute hypotensive reactions. At present the usefulness of the administration of ca-antagonists in the so-called cerebrovascular insufficiency or dementia and various others cerebral disorders with vertigo could not be demonstrated.

Here's a discussion from another site on the use of sibelium for migraines. I can't vouch for this site, but like ours, it consists of people sharing their expeiences. If it helps:

As for weight gain, the only intervention I've used that did not cause weight gain was topamax. It seems to be a by-product of our meds in general. Control your urge to consume between meals, keep the meals reasonable, and plan for a spring wardrobe change! Good luck, God bless, and let us know how this works for you. lance

Print the PDF file, below, and use it to discuss treatment options with any doc you see.
