Any helpful suggestions for Shadows?
Feb 24th, 2012 at 6:07pm

I have a long remission period and usually have to deal with shadows throughout the year.  I haven't seen too much about them on the boards and was curious if there any suggestions for dealing with them.  The only thing I've found helpful is to use a cold compress.  Actually, I usually grab one of my daughter's Capri Sun pouches and hold it to my head.  Since that looks rediculous at work, I was hoping for other options.

Also, I find that I'll have some shadows that aren't painful, but affect me in other ways.  My mood, fatigue, lack of concentration or affects my memory.  Are those called shadows or is there a different name for those?  The cold compress helps with those too, but here again, open to other suggestions.

I greatly appreciate the forum and the help that you all give.  It would be best if no one had to deal with these things, but it's nice not to be in it alone.

Much appreciated!

I just chug down an energy drink. The combination of taurine and caffeine takes care of a shadow in just a few minutes.

Between bad hits, I generally do less of the Western medicine (as in, Imitrex, energy drinks, doctor visits) and more of the Eastern (ice or heat, peppermint, counter-irritation, topical patches or gels, sprinting in cold air, good friends).

The 02 and verapamil are constant companions.  Pred shows up for dinner occasionally.   Wink

Most of us believe shadows are real and actual low Kip CHs. When you think about it, it makes sense. We're not supposed to have pain where we do have pain, regardless of whether its a screamer or not. So...the best advice I received was to treat even the shadows like I would a full blown hit. Knock back the energy drink right away. Some have found this will dispell the shadows, others like me, have found it generally will not. But...couple that with a round of O2, and the shadow disappears. Untreated shadows may lead to a harsher hit, but they certainly do aggravate and for me, can even kick off a migraine. Hit 'em early and hit 'em hard. Good luck, and God bless. lance

Thank you for the suggestions.  I don't usually have oxygen with me throughout the remission period and I gave up caffeine years ago, it never occurred to me to keep energy drinks on hand.

It makes sense that the shadows are low Kip CHs, though.  I'll have to remember to treat them that way.

Thanks again!

Hey Keith,

We've yet to find a cluster headache sufferer (CH'er) who wasn't vitamin D3 deficient.  The normal reference range for 25-Hydroxyvitamin D, a.k.a. 25(OH)D, the serum level metabolite of vitamin D3 is 30-100 ng/mL, (75-250 nmol/L). However, lab tests for 25(OH)D for CH'ers with active CH have all come back ≤42 ng/mL, (105 nmpl/L).

The exciting news is 70 out of the 100 CH'ers who tried the anti-inflammatory regimen with 10,000 IU/day vitamin D3 had a significant reduction in the frequency and severity of their CH in less than 10 days...  some in as little as 12 hours.  Most of them were pain free before the end of the third week on this regimen.

Some of the CH'ers who have gone pain free taking the anti-inflammatory regimen have taken the same lab test for 25(OH)D and all have had their results come back at >60 ng/mL.

The take away here is to see your family doctor and ask for the lab test for 25-Hydroxyvitamin D.

Take care,

V/R, Batch

You love lots of things if you live around them. But there isn't any woman and there isn't any horse, that’s as lovely as a great airplane. If it's a beautiful fighter, your heart will be ever there

Hi CH.  I'm new to the board.  I'm also an episodic sufferer and going through a spell now.  I laughed when I saw your word "shadow" (not sure if this is a term we all use -- I thought I made that up.  I call them the fog or the shadow myself).  I get them for 2 weeks before a spell starts and/or sometimes intermittently without a spell following.  Which is actually kind of helpful as it lets me start preparing my life for what's to come and get in to see my neurologist.  After years of trying everything under the sun (holistic or toxic) I found something that helps with the shadow.  Definitely, the caffeine rush as someone else mentioned.  The other is the old holistic remedy of capsaicin but I found that taking the capsaicin (i.e., pepper) pills was too harsh on my stomach.  Available at most drug stores is a product called "Sinus Busters" (a chiropractor recommended this).  It blows open your sinus cavities (and capillaries I think) and can help take that pain level down a few notches.  It's a nasal spray and is kind of hard to take (you're snorting pepper) but I've found it to be really helpful.  I try to avoid caffeine too but downing 1/2 a Red Bull definitely helps.  I also try to avoid raising my core temperature or blood pressure too much because I've found that can ratchet up the shadow as well (no hot showers, moderate, non-cardio exercise).

Hi Kristie. We do call them shadows and they are hard to explain, but just realizing they are low level hits helps. Your suggestions on nasal sprays are good ones. From time to time, some of us have found a spray like 4 Way will help. I'll have to look for Sinus Busters. Capsaicin has a respected mention here from time to time as well. Not sure I want to do that, but it's good to have another weapon in the ol' arsenal. Blessings. lance

Hey Whimsey!  I don't want to overplay the Sinus Busters -- it definitely won't abort an attack, but it can help with that shadow thing without resorting to some of the more toxic drugs we all have to go on when the full blown attacks are hitting.  And if you're prone to allergies or changes in weather, it can help with that.  As far as capsacian -- I think you can get it in several forms (pills, tinctures, etc.) but they can be harsh on the stomach (you're swallowing a tablespoon or so of red pepper).  The Sinus Busters is a wee bit painful (snorting the pepper) but I've found it's a more immediate relief.  It used to only be available through a direct order or in health stores but recently I've found it at the bigger retailers (usually in the allergy section).  Hope it helps.  At the price, it's worth at least trying. Smiley
