LOOKING FOR GUINEA PIGS "Dopamine Syndrome" Trials
Nov 20th, 2012 at 10:13pm

My name is Dr. Elliott.  I have a Phd. in kicking ass and Googling shit.  This thread will be for 2 years, 730 days.  Like every good scientist, I will be experimenting on myself (lol, some sarcasm to lighten the mood) and whoever else is willing to do whatever it takes to be cluster free for the rest of their lives.  The goal is to reach 2 years with absolutely no clusters, thereby concluding my "research" and cementing my finds, in hopes of being the man that shuts the door on CH and laughing in its face.

Hypothesis:  CH are caused by dopamine overdose/dopamine receptor overload.  Dopamine plays a part in the hypothalamus (active region of the brain during CH attacks?) which controls the Endocrine system (trigeminal nerve, the one that fucks up your day).  CH suffers are genetically susceptible to one adverse effect of "dopamine syndrome":  Cluster Headaches.

Through a "rebooting" of the brains internal wiring, dopamine receptors can heal themselves of the damage caused by overuse or overstimulation.

CH suffers, being largely male, have overstimulated these dopamine receptors through masturbation. (RED FLAG, keep reading though).  Our generation at least, has been able to constantly increase the limit cap of our dopamine receptors by finding newer and newer untapped dopamine banks due to the Information Age.  Porn is always ready to give the dopamine receptors what they need, when they need it, something that may seem convenient, but is pumping the endocrine system with so much that the overwhelming amount of "dopamine damage control" loses its fucking mind when the seasons change and daylights savings occurs, resetting the hypothalamus, triggering a daisy chain effect.

The Trials:  Give up porn, give up masturbation.  Sex is ok.

Who's in?

I am currently on day 5.  First Cluster Free day of my cycle.  I have a very strange shadow going on that started dead center of my forehead, and is moving left.  Just a moment ago it shut down my left nostril.  My clusters occur on the right side.

There is something very strange going on in my brain.  I feel it really is being rewired.  I hope this doesn't bite me in the ass and I end up having one tomorrow.

Will update tomorrow, and every day after.  I will find the cure for us, if not through this, somehow.

I realize I look very stupid, and I don't really know what order to present everything I know about CH in, but I've been researching it for a long time.  The circadian rhythm, trigeminal nerve,  hypothalamus, all related to dopamine.  A google search for "porn related ED" will bring you thousands of new findings that you may not want to see.

There's so much information I want to present, but I'm a friggin high school student who's been in the military for 4 years.  Sorry.

At best, my theory works and CH is cured.  At the worst...well I've wasted your time, but just follow my cluster log and we'll see together.

Porn and masturbation as the primary cause of CH.

Maybe I HAVEN'T heard it all yet.

Mid level shadow, on my LEFT side.

No forehead anymore, it has literally moved across my fucking face.  I'm gonna take a shot of imitrex and hit the sack.  Tomorrow is a new day gents, remember this is day 5 of "abstinence".

I'm fully in favour of the trial while no guinea pigs are hurt or stressed.

I like me dinner unbruised.

Sam,

God loves a Marine...  and thank you for your service...

I also appreciate your Devil Dog approach to finding a way to control your cluster headaches...  That said, I think you've got target fixation on the wrong nuclear receptor...

Google VDR, VDRE, 25(OH)D and 1,25(OH)2D for starters...  then ask your Unit MO for a lab test for 25(OH)D...

Odds are your serum concentration of 25(OH)D is below the normal reference range of 30 to 100 ng/mL...

Please keep us posted on the results...

Thanks Batch, and I will do that.

I recently got a "complete" blood test done and nothing was found at all, but I will mention everything you said.

If whackin it was the cause of ch wouldn't every male have them in proportion to the number of times whacked?  Thusly some would be chronic and some episodic.  But everyone would have them.

Sam,

The lab test for 25(OH)D is in the endocrine diagnostic panel so will not show up in a CBC/Chemistry panel.

You'll need to ask for the 25(OH)D diagnostic lab test... and don't take "No" for an answer...

The odds are you're vitamin D3 deficient, i.e., a serum concentration of 25(OH)D less than 30 ng/mL, and that deficiency is likely contributing to your episodic cluster headaches.

CH'ers who have gone pain free while taking the anti-inflammatory regimen with 10,000 IU/day or more vitamin D3 and then gone in for the 25(OH)D lab test have all reported being in a range of 60 to 110 ng/mL.

I love your creative theory.  But now let's figure out how women CH'ers play into this (I know, women don't get CH).  Smiley We may not watch as much porn as guys, but there's always shopping and chocolate.  This experiment will be a little difficult setting up the parameters.  Still, I applaud your ingenuity!

Since real, honest-to-goodness sex is allowed within the confines of this theory, it must be that the wimmens aren't eating real, honest-to-goodness chocolate (Baby Ruth vs. Ghirardelli). Or doing real, honest-to-goodness shopping (Walmart online vs. Sax Fifth Avenue in person).

Well the idea is that CH suffers are genetically prone to this.  I'm trying to connect the dots.

This is where my theory falls short and I chalk it up to either misdiagnosis of severe migraines, or perhaps damaged dopamine receptors from birth.  Sorry ladies but my theory fails you.

Batch -  I will ask for this test ASAP, unfortunately my entire unit is out for the holiday.

UPDATE:  Last night I gave myself an imitrex injection around midnight for the odd Left-side cluster headache I was having.

Woke up at 6:30 for formation, had breakfast and was back in bed by 10:30.

From 10:30 AM to 4:30 I slept.  I woke up to a CH....shadow.  The ones that wake me up are usually full blown attacks.  Gave myself a shot if imitrex and here I am.

My usual attacks occur at 10 AM and 10 PM.  The ones that wake me up being 2-4 in the morning, and OCCASIONAL attacks around 2 PM.

BOTTOM LINE: My frequency of attacks is down.  My intensity of attacks is down.  Cheesy

Sam,

Good news...  Your cycle may be ending...

Run down to the PX or Minni Mart and pick up some 5,000 IU vitamin D3 gel caps, some Citracal Plus™ calcium citrate tablets formulated with magnesium and zinc and some Nature Made Omega 3 Fish Oil gel caps.  If they don't carry them the Food Lion in Jacksonville should have them.

If you take two of each with the biggest meal of the day... I'll wager your CH cycle will end even faster...

Take care and have a Happy Thanksgiving...
