Intro and some questions?
Jan 31st, 2013 at 3:05pm

Hi everyone. My name is Tabitha. I've been lurking here for quite some time but figure I'd post. I first started getting cluster headaches when I was 11. Everyone thought I was making up the pain, so I wasn't diagnosed until I was 18. I'm 22 now. I use to only get cluster headaches once a year or so, but they've been increasing over time. My last cycle ended in October only to start again in January. Is it possible to turn chronic? I usually get between 4 to 7 cluster headaches a day. I've lost jobs, friends, relationships, even dropped out of school and lots more because of these damn things. Sad

I have a few questions if that's okay. Mostly I wonder how you guys do it. It seems like everything I do revolves around the pain. I'm about to move in with a roommate and am terrified now that I'm in cycle. How do you guys manage to hold down jobs, start families, and live a mostly 'normal' life? Do you tell people ahead of time? During the job interview? It seems like no one really understands. They always think of cluster headaches being like migraines.

The best way to deal with CH is to be pro-active. I managed a 30 year career in law enforcement while being an episodic CH'er. Raised two beautiful daughters and just celebrated my 30th wedding anniversary with one of the worlds best supporters. Do you have  a decent neuro? An effective prevent med? Good abortives?

I used lithium as my prevent as I could still work at the doses we used, with very little in the way of side effects. I used oxygen and occasionally imitrex injections as my abortives.

All that has been changed by "The Batch Regimen." Also known as the D-3 or the vitamin regimen. It's kept me off cycle for 3 years after over 30 years of episodic CH. Please give it a try. You have nothing to lose, it's good for you even without CH, it's cheap, well worth a trial run:

As far as going chronic? Yeah, it happens. You could also be starting another cycle. The beasts ability to morph is legendary. Undecided Glad you stuck your head in, let us know what area of the world you live in, maybe we can refer you to a decent CH doc.

"Somebody had to say it" is usually a piss poor excuse to be mean.

Hi and Welcome Tabitha

Yes it's possible for someone episodic to turn chronic and for someone chronic to turn episodic. It's also possible that it's just another cycle you've started on.

Do fire off all the questions you can think of. If we can help we will do, plus tell us things too as that way we can learn more too.

As to how we do it, it is really about living between CH hits and CH cycles, trying to live as normal a life as possible and to enjoy it as much as we can when we can. For coping during cycles, a lot is around being prepared with a good preventive and abortives, having them to hand when a CH arrives.

Many people like to talk to people first about CH, being open, giving information and answering questions, but this is very much on an individual basis. It works great for some people and not for others.

There is a great letter that someone wrote to give to work colleagues - Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register. People have used it to good effect. It may work with people you are in contact with.

Hope this helps...

Hi Tabitha, and welcome. In addition to what Mike and Joe have said, I was wondering what you are doing to manage the CHs? Since you have been diagnosed with them have the doctors given you an preventatives or abortives? I ask because we have a fairly extensive log of personal experience with stuff that does and does not work. Drop us a line and tell us what you've been doing. God bless. lance
