It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance.
Feb 25th, 2013 at 6:56am

Hello everyone; or, hello everyone who reads this post.

I am not entirely sure how to introduce myself on a website of this sort. I'm a gentleman, intelligent, scholarly, and I get those funny little headaches that seem to make life horrific and sad.

So, there is some debate with my doctor about what type of headaches I have. I am not asking for a diagnosis. I've already discovered the diagnosis. It's unmistakable - am I right?

1. family history of chronic cluster headaches.
2. SEVERE stabbing/boring pain like a hot railroad spike being hammered into my skull, always the left side. It feels like a physical object is there. pushing my eye out of its way. This is  constant boring pain with brief bouts of 'shock-like' sensations where it gets  so bad I trash my legs involuntarily.
3. My father warned me about the eye pain when I started showing signs that I was getting these headaches [I was on opioids for a number of years and then suboxone for rehabilitation and this may have masked some of the pain, I suppose] I never realized how hot and forceful the pain in my eye could be. I'll tell you what I wouldn't mind: a frigid icepick in the face. Preferable to this lancing burning tearing pain. My eyelid sags a bit. My nose gets stuffy and what a pain just below my eye.
4. I cannot lie down in the dark with these headaches. I find that if I'm not pacing the house and shouting about something, I'm rocking on my bed and hitting my head against the wall. I have broken a knuckle once punching my coffee table.  I didn't get treatment for the knuckle, to this day a good bang of my hand provides a nice gating response for a little while.
5. They always occur at 1-2pm and last about 90 minutes. Then I always get another between 6-7. always. I get another at 10pm, and usually wake up with one in the middle of the night.  They never last more than 90 minutes.
6. It is the worst pain I've ever felt.
7. they occur starting at the fall equinox, get worse at the winter solstice, then subside after the spring equinox. Every year, for the past 7 years.
8. The pain is such that leaving my body is something I wish I could do. I feel horribly sad that I can't pull myself out of body during these episodes.

So, cluster headache sufferers, what do you say? You ever experience  anything like that?

My father told me to come here because he lives far away and can't always help me out with these attacks. I realize theres very little to do after a diagnosis. But this pain is so unbearably severe I just want someone to effing acknowledge that I am experiencing it. Seeing neurologist soon.

Did I mention that I came here because I'm getting these silly little headaches that ruin my life for half the year?

In any case, it's nice to know there are places to go where I can talk to people.

Welcome. I'd say you should take the cluster quiz on this site and get to a headache specialist for a proper diagnosis. You need to rule out anything more nefarious.

Agreed; and you will need a physician who knows about CHs (if that is the medical diagnosis you get although it certainly sounds like the beast) to secure the best Rxs: O2, injectable sumatriptan, and a good preventative. You don't have to suffer needlessly, and be careful about the beast's schedule. Taking it out for a walk-time can change on a moment's notice. Good to have you aboard. Blessings. lance

Welcome to the board! Funny little headaches...yeah, they do disrupt the life just the littlest teeniest bit! Grin

Now the GREAT news. You absolutely do NOT have to suffer and roll with them like your forefathers did. We now have a boatload of treatments that tame beasty down.

What part of the world are you from? We need to get you referred to  neuro who has a clue as to how one treats the beast. We have imitrex shots and nasal sprays that will stop an attack in minutes, we have breathing pure oxygen which believe it or not will stop an attack even faster. We have verapamil, topomax and lithium, which used as a prevent will substantially reduce the number fo attacks you get, we have a simple daily vitamin regimen which is HALTING cycles completely for many.

Most of the above requires we get you to a neuro that doesn't tell you to relax and take an aspirin! So lrt us know where abouts you're from and lets get you off this headbanging bus and into some effective treatments. So glad you found us.

Listen to these folks, they know what they are talking about.  Lots to do, lots to read... we'll have this thing tamed down for ya in no time.

Step 1.  Get Oxygen.  Non-rebreathing mask.  25 liters per minute flow rate.  It's a game changer.

I'm going to see Dr. Kang at the Dent Neurologic Institute in Buffalo. They specialize in headaches. I saw him when I first got them. Only zomig nasal spray helped at all.

the pain I feel during an attack is bad, but its not until the lancing/boring pain in my skull that it becomes unbearable.  I know these aren't migraines. I get those too. Totally different feeling, migraines are a walk in the park.

This pain is sharp. like that first moment you accidentally slice your hand with a chef's knife. Then it feels like it's being driven into my head. Not hammered, which would be throbbing pain. I feel it from the top of my head to the back of my neck, one side only, near the ear, some on the face.

I'll for the Doctor's advice, but when I saw him before I was 17 and never really knew my diagnosis. It may well have been cluster.I know you don't bang your head on the wall with a migraine.

Anyway, yeah, there is much to do. I was told these tend to get worse once they start because you lose some myelin sheath on the Trigeminal nerve. is this accurate at all? I handle pain very well, but that doesn't mean I handle this very well or that I want to let it be.

Thanks for the preliminary advice everyone.

I should mention that I have a congenital heart defect (thanks accutane!) and so things like verapamil are out. Imitrex injections have helped in the past but the Seratonin overload after the fact is awful. Zomig helped. My dad takes maxalt. I am on zonegran and lamictal, zonegran for headaches and lamictal for bipolar disorder. I'm delightful, aren't I? Nice and healthy. Well, I eat vegan, so that makes up for it.

I've been on topamax. It made everything taste like pennies, my working memory became my unemployed memory, and I had a constant tremor. I'd try it again if it would help. zonegran helps a little.

It’s a vitamin/mineral/fish oil supplement, all over the counter stuff. It’s up to an 81% success rate of those who try it and respond to the survey so you’re just shooting yourself in the foot if you don’t give it a shot. I’m 3 years pain free on it after a 30 plus year track record with episodic CH. Best of all, it’s healthy for you even without CH!

I second Guiseppi's advice on the D3 regimen. It's a game-changer.

I would do everything on that list but the fish oil; I'm an ethical vegan [as opposed to a health nut]. I wonder if chia extract, which contains the same fatty acids as fish oil, would help? I take that. I'll have to pick up some boron, but we'll see!

There are omega-3 fatty acid sources from algae you can seek out.

very nice, thank you! I tried what I had on hand today for my very annoying 12:20 headache. Magnesium, vitamin D3, B-complex, wormwood, and chia extract. This helped enormously.

Here's a curiosity. They say you can't sit still during an attack. Does that mean, at all? I can generally sit down, read something, but every few minutes or so I flip out and either 1.bash my head in with whatever or 2. thrash my legs. I wonder if this qualifies.

I've made my appointment with Dent, we'll see what Dr. Kang says. I know from past experience that he's very good about giving out samples of abortive medicines. I am lucky, I have incredibly good prescription coverage. Better than anybody I've ever met, but some free stuff is good to see what works. I can't afford to throw away copays.

Has anyone ever used zonegran as prophylactic medicine? Also, Gabapentin seems to help. It definitely makes you goofy though. Not good in most cases. I do prefer being a goofy fool to  bashing my head on a table.

The D3 regimen is not meant to be used as an abortive therapy. It's preventative in nature, meaning you have to take it and keep taking it to prevent future attacks.

Not everyone paces I don't think - I don't.  I typically end up in a fetal position on my bed with some leg thrashing due to the pain.  Happily O2 worked great as an abortive for me so I only suffered for ~15 min.
