Can't ya smell that smell!???
Mar 1st, 2013 at 10:01pm

...OK....I am an odd bird...but in THIS family...that makes me "normal"   bwaaaa-hahahaha

I live in a second floor apt...overlooking a VERY busy road. Fire trucks...police cars...and more traffic than should be lived next to. It's also a residential area...with lots of folks with LOTS of dogs!

These fine people walk those pooches on a regular basis..I smile and nod..and fondly think of MY old doggies. Now then...most do it for the RIGHT reason..."hey fuzzbutt...I been gone ALL day...this time is for you....WALKIES"?

That's about 9 out of 10...and one of those is a guy with a 3-legged dog. You wouldn't think to see it was...but it is....that dog just GOES bout most normally. They do stop occasionally for a breather...and I'm telling you...the look from that dog to that guy is....THIS is SO way cool!  Just buds out for a walk.....dayum....

Now...you all know...a dog "sees" with his nose...the WHOLE world is one big stink...to be explored and enjoyed! 1 out of 10 of those walkers don't get it. Seems they're walking for themselves and fido is along for the drag...and I mean DRAG. Poor dumb dog is yanked and jerked at every pause and sniff...taking the entire joy out of the whole exercise. I wonder that those dogs don't just hide in the closet when the leash comes out.

Those kind of people think dogs are weird...WHY do you HAVE to smell EVERYTHING? Let's go! Actually, THEY are the weird ones....would they walk down a beautiful street with their eyes closed? Neglect to bring back a story of a mesmerizing sunset?  I think not.

What pooch... in their right doggy mind of delight would do any different...and bypass their version of mesmer??.... for example, a delightful pile of stinky shit to be rolled in.... and PROUDLY brought home? Or at least a memorable pee spray..."geez, that Butch got some stank on that one!" Oh my, memories to dream about...

Perhaps a jaded opinion...I've made my livlihood by my nose for lo these many years...but it is a fact...the ONLY sense wired DIRECTLY into the brain is the sense of smell. One whiff...of one odor...and any one of us is transported immediately, directly, and intimately to the time it first impressed.

I'm thinking...at 1000x the olfactory ability of humans...those doggies are some kinda lucky....

Best

jonboy

edited to finish...it posted too soon...all by itself!

Prior to a concussion, which seemed to trigger my CHs starting a couple of weeks later, I used to have a terrible sense of smell. But almost overnight it improved drastically, especially for any smell relating to burning with it keenest for burnt toast.

I guess that must be a benefit of some sort.

Anyway, who wants to be "normal"?

Personally, I refuse to be normal.  Normal is only average, and I refuse to demean myself! Cheesy

Jon, you've done it again.  You put a smile on my face and made me laugh.  Thanks, Bro.  I needed it tonight.

BTW, my Yorkie has me so trained that I carry him for part of our walks... when he's all done smelling things, of course Smiley

Well, I live in the country so my dogs have room to run and smell at will. It's when they bring their "smell throphies" home and put them on the porch for ME to SMELL that I object... Smiley Roll Eyes

The best is when dogs get sprayed by a skunk...that is always a lovely time.

Langa,

Here in the great liberal enclave of the Chicagoland our animal control will do nothing about wild animals running wild in the city.  As a consequence, over the last 5 years my dog has killed over 30 skunks.  That wouldn't be so bad, but he is very territorial and protective.  He always holds a wake for any animal he kills and will guard it for a minimum of three days, sometimes more.  He brings his toys to them and will lay his toys on their bodies, I guess hoping they will get up and play with him some more.  My daughter could tell you exactly how many he has killed.  Skunks, Raccoons. Possums, Squirrels, even birds.  Of course, he makes most of his kills on Wed nights, right after the garbage has been picked up for the week!  That gets kind of choice sometimes in the summer!

Between him and Casey Stengel you have my two favorite philosophers!  One advantage of being such an old fart is I've had the pleasure of having seen them first hand.  We don't seem to be developing the same kind of character in the kids now days.  Kind of boring.
