deja vue all over again

My name is Jerry. Had my first CH at about 40.  In the beginning the attacks hit with no warning, no name, just monstrous pain like my brain was frying. As they became more frequent, I saw a series of doctors who knew nothing about CH and invariably diagnosed it as migraine or sinusitis.  One poked a needle up my nostril and injected novocaine. (That actually worked for a day). Finally found a neurologist who told me it was called CH, put me on verapamil and prednisone which did nothing, and on oxygen which worked wonders.  From then on it you all know the story – years of living with CH cycles interspersed with remissions. Fifteen years ago, my CH cycles magically stopped completely. Free at last !!!  Until now. Two weeks ago, at the tender age of 85, they’re back. I’m getting hits 2 or 3 times a  night, 1 or 2 in the day.  I have an oxygen concentrator and one E tank prescribed for lung problems.  Thanks to Chuck and others on this board, I’m now pulling together stuff to get my GP to write a prescription for high flow rate oxygen.
For now, just one question:  does Medicare cover oxygen for CH or not?  I’m pretty sure the answer is no, but I’ve seen some comments that seem a little ambiguous.  From an initial inquiry, it looks like my insurance won’t either. It is pathetic that Medicare will pay for treating trivia like post-nasal drip or ingrown toenails, but not for this grotesque affliction.  I don’t know if I could fight it again without this wonderful site and all you smart and wonderful people. Thank you!!!

Welcome back Jerry, so sorry it's the beasty that brought you here. Please check out the newest "latest and greatest" for CH, seriously it's the most exciting development around here since oxygen:

Follow this link to the medications section of this board and read the post

Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

It’s a vitamin/mineral/fish oil supplement, all over the counter stuff. It’s up to an 81% success rate of those who try it and respond to the survey so you’re just shooting yourself in the foot if you don’t give it a shot. I’m 3 years pain free on it after a 30 plus year track record with episodic CH. Best of all, it’s healthy for you even without CH!

Joe
