New and Chronic (I Think)
May 5th, 2013 at 11:05pm

Hey guys, my name is Alex and I have been suffering from Cluster Headaches ever since I was a teenager. It actually took me quite a while to diagnose myself accurately. When I was younger, I used to think that I was suffering from Allergy Headaches, since most of my attacks occurred during the spring time, but then as I got older, my attacks became more intense and more random. Recently (About 4 Months ago) I started to have very severe cluster headaches (9-10 kip) and they have not gone away ever since.

Fortunately, thanks to this website, and a few others, I have been able to keep them under the 5 kip scale threshold by using a variety of "natural" techniques since I have no health insurance. I just wanted to talk a little bit about my routine as well as my very strange cluster headache pattern.

-1500 mg's of Magnesium Daily (One for breakfast, lunch, dinner)
-1000 mg Taurine Tablet (Only taken if an attack is nearby)
- 10 mg Melatonin (Just before 10pm)
- I avoid Sodium Nitrate, Alcohol, Cigarettes, and all other Drugs.
- I don't have a specific amount of water that I consume, but I make water my only choice for liquids.

For the 3 months or so that I have been on this, I have found pretty decent success. To me, anything below a 5 in pain is tolerable, and as long as I can function in my daily life I am satisfied. When I first started having cluster attacks they were consistently on the left side of my temple (shadows included). Two months into my cycle, my pain has shifted to the right side of my temple, but I still have shadows on the left side of my temple. I am not sure if anyone else has ever experienced a pattern similar to this, but so far from everything I have read, I have yet to see this type of pattern on anyone else.

Sorry for the long rant, and thanks for everything. This site is the only reason why I haven't given up.

Not a whole bunch of literature to be had...
--
J Headache Pain. 2009 Aug;10(4):259-63. Epub 2009 Jun 3.
Lateralization in cluster headache: a Nordic multicenter study.

Meyer EL, Laurell K, Artto V, Bendtsen L, Linde M, Kallela M, Tronvik E, Zwart JA, Jensen RM, Hagen K.

Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Division of Neurology at Karolinska Insitutet, Stockholm, Sweden.

A slight predominance of cluster pain on the right side has been reported in several studies. The aim of this large retrospective Nordic multicenter study was to estimate the prevalence of right- and left-sided pain in cluster headache (CH) patients with side-locked pain, the prevalence of side shifts in episodic and chronic CH patients, and the occurrence of cranial autonomic symptoms related to pain side.

AMONG 383 CLUSTER PATIENTS, 55 (14%) HAD EXPERIENCED PAIN SIDE SHIFT. OF THE REMAINING 328 INDIVIDUALS WITHOUT SIDE SHIFT, THERE WAS NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE OCCURRENCE OF RIGHT-SIDED AND LEFT-SIDED PAIN (54 VS. 46%). THE PREVALENCE OF SIDE SHIFT WAS SIMILAR FOR EPISODIC AND CHRONIC CH AND THE OCCURRENCE OF CRANIAL AUTONOMIC SYMPTOMS WAS NOT INFLUENCED BY THE PAIN SIDE. In conclusion, previous reports of a side difference in location of cluster pain could not be confirmed in this large Nordic sample.

Hey there, Alex, and welcome. I suppose I'd be negligent if I didn't start off by saying it is sometimes dangerous to self diagnose even if all of the symptoms fit a generalized description of CHs. I know, you don't have insurance. So, having said that, check out the various posts here on the vitamin D3 regimen. I think you'll find it to your liking. I also want to add that I did read somewhere, and perhaps others can verify this or shoot it down, that taking Taurine regularly/daily can be a bad idea for CHs. We do find relief when taken in combination with caffeine, as in energy drinks, but not regularly. I could be wrong but it's worth investigating. God bless. lance
