Topamax-how long to start working
May 31st, 2013 at 12:35pm

For those of you using topamax, how long does it take to build up to the point it starts working?  The headaches have creeped into my husbands work day and he is mortified.  This was his worst fear.  I am praying between the topamax and d3 he will find some relief soon but  less than a week on both.  Topamax day 5.  Panic, depression and fear have kicked in big time.

Nevermind. I think it has taken effect. Aelinglong with the extremely "dopey" feeling.  Cutting back or off completely until we can speak with dr on Monday.  He cannot drive or work this doped up.

Hi Lori,

I tried topamax a couple of years ago. It did work to suppress the intensity of the headaches, but at great cost. I became very depressed while taking that medication, and I am usually a rather carefree and upbeat kind of guy. Prednisone has worked as well if not better for me, but also carries risk. If possible, I would recommend looking into the pill form of imitrex (you can get the generic sumatriptan succinate). My doctor gave me a running prescription, so even though the insurance only covered one fill a month I have been able to stock up in preparation for the next cluster. The subcutaneous injections work faster than the pill, but the pill is easier to use when at work or in a public place. I hope this helps. Best of luck!
