My husband the CH sufferer
Jun 19th, 2013 at 2:02pm

Hi everyone,
My name is Suzy and my husband is Bob.  He has been diagnosed with CH since 1990. This was after he had all his teeth pulled on the right side (had to sign waivers), also had nasal surgery.  Finally went to another EN&T doctor who's wife worked at Jefferson in Pa. Finally he was diagnosed.  He has suffered so much with these "monsters". He has been on verapamil, oxygen, tapers, gotten blocks, you name it he has tried it.  2 1/2 years ago he experimented with "illegal substances" that totally knocked him out of cycle .  This past March he started getting them again. Tomorrow he is going in for a 2 day imitrex infusion.  Don't know what to expect but always hopeful.  He's not very good at expressing how he feels and is only good working on the computer when watching porn. LOL So I'm posting on his behalf.  This last cycle has been so debilitating.  He is so depressed.   Keep us in your prayers for tomorrow and I'll let you all know how it goes.  Glad I found this place.

Welcome! Read all you can here.  Is he working a headache specialist yet?  Have you read up on the d3 regiment yet? More help is on the way - I let the veterans give you more details on some ideas for helping him as I am new to CH myself.

Your comments imply that you are still with Jefferson: if so, can't get much higher on the pole for quality care.

At this stage stay with their treatment plan so that everyone has a fair opportunity to see the results. Don't start playing with any of the "favorites" which folks will suggest to you until Jefferson has exhausted it's bag of tricks.

I can only assume Jeff. has considered the issue of "cluster-LIKE" headaches. At least ask. This is a complex, confounding group of issues which mimic Cluster but which are not Cluster Headaches. They will grasp the question.

Your husband's emotional contriction is, as you well know, a big barrier to working out all sorts of issues. PERHAPS--you could whisper in the primary doc's ear in hopes he (doc) could nudge your husband into talking with someone who could "help you control your Clusters" without using the big word, counselor/therapist, etc.

Reality is, how we emotionally deal with such chronic medical conditions can make a helpful benefit to the treatment packag. Depending on external, doc driven medical treatments, leaves the medicine cabinet a bit empty.

Jefferson is the heart of the most effective form of counseling/therapy to come around in decades.

Broadly, called "cognitive theapy(s)" it will appeal to your husband because the core idea is, "You can learn how to take control over your distress". Puts HIM in charge vs. being worked upon by an outside expert. (A legit, if wifely sneak attack.<bg>)

Please keep us informed.

Just a quick update,  Bob is doing great after his 1st infusion.  He actually slept a full 8 hours without waking up!!!  I loved hearing him snore and this am he is like a different person. My old Bob!!  He's doing his 2nd infusion today then starts a 5 day taper.  Hopefully this knocks the crap out of this cycle.  Thanks for all the advice.  Just heard about the D3 regiem on here 2 days ago.  Talked to our Rachel (doctor) yesterday about it and a few other options I saw on here.  She was cool with the vitimin D thing so we are going to add that to his every day meds.  Since he is going to be hooked up for the next 6 hours I'm going to explore my new fav site.  Again, thanks for listening and ill keep you updated.

Your comment about adding vit D system is not clear: adding with the doc's O.K. or without her awareness?

If without the doc's O.K.--unwise!

The doc has a treatment plan starting and if something else is added--without her awareness--it becomes impossible to tell which treatment is working.

By all means, read here, but changing horses in mid-stream can mess up the results.

She said ok to the vitamin d3--but then again I didn't have the whole list with me so I will be calling her on Monday as today was her day off.  Thanks for giving me the heads up. Very much appreciated, especially right now when he is pain free for the past 36 or so hours.  Wouldn't want to mess things up.

Thought I would bring you up to date on Bob.  No headaches!!  Slept most of Friday night, woke up~~started doing yard work~~after a few hours of that ~ate ~remembered Dentist apt~~got novacaine both sides~~did some shopping~~came home sat in sun and swam in pool~~started felling pressure in eye and then the shadow.  Sunday all day same thing with shadow and pressure~~he was functioning though and no headache~~this was day 2 of the five day taper~~Monday 10 am~~he calls from work~~feels fantastic~~Tuesday He's eating everything and feeling normal!!!  YAY  As far as doing any of the Vitamin D3 thing and other suggestions we will be talking to Rachel at our next apt (July 1st) about it and see what she says.  Have my list ready.   I'll keep in touch when I can.  Thanks for helping us out during a very stressful and scarey time..

Newest update.  As of today Bob has been headache free.  YAY!!!  He did wait a few weeks before trying to have a beer or 2, and low and behold his eye started watering and closing and the right side of his face started to droop.  He didn't get a headache though.  He has been enjoying a few beers on the weekend while hanging by the pool and enjoying the sun.  We did call Dr. Rachel and discussed the vitamin D3 regime and she said not to mess with a good thing!! So we are not!  He is like a new man as most folks who suffer with CH when they are headache free.  Don't know how long this will last but at least we know the infusions work.  Just another Thank You to all that responded to my initial post. And too all those sufferers out there still suffering our thoughts and prayers are with you.  I will keep you up to date on Bob's progress!

Great news!!! I'm really pleased for you both. Now get out and enjoy life to the full.

However be prepared for the next cycle, which hopefully will be a long time in the future. It is a lot easier to have stuff in stock now rather than trying to scramble around to get things when it returns.

Don't forget about the D3 approach, hold it in reserve for the future in case the infusions stop working.

What Mike said! Embrace the pain free time...BUT ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS assume the next attack is in five minutes and make sure all your ducks are in a row for doing battle. Hoping this remission lasts forever. Wink
