Quitting Verapamil, side effects included anxiety
Nov 27th, 2013 at 4:16pm

My recent cycle started 4 weeks ago (after a 4 year remission).  I quickly started my normal measures which include a relatively low dose regimen of Verapamil (80MG, quick release, 3 times per day).

This dose of verapamil works for me, and within 2 weeks my HA frequency was greatly reduced. Unfortunately, this go around the verapamil also created more noticeable side effects.   One of which was anxiety - several times to the point of un-explainable, severe panic attacks.

Running a search, anxiety is not something that many have experienced from Verapamil, though some have.  In fact, Verapamil has actually been used combat anxiety in patients.  Go figure.

Its too bad, because it was clearly working, and I was even sleeping like a baby.   However, the anxiety seemed be growing, and the acute panic attacks - well, those are just as debilitating as clusters.   And just as tough to explain.

But I took myself off verapamil 4 days ago, and I am quickly back to feeling "normal".  No weird anxiety, sluggishness, or terrorizing panic attacks.    Of course, my HA are back, and as of yesterday and last night, they are hanging out in full force.

So, I am simply aborting them left, right, and all night with 02 - backed up by imitrex shots when necessary.

I have also begun the D3 regimen, something I was going to do anyway. Only now I am not waiting until next weeks blood test.

Finally, I am going to go ahead and increase my exercise level.  I might as well get something good out of this cycle.

If the D3 doesn't help by the end of December, I will have to try another prevent.  Or go back on Verapamil with a script for some sort of valium.    Because in January, I start traveling again, and coordinating 02 is, sadly, not feasible.

Since these reactions are contrary to both your experience and ours with Verap, I'd not assume it's the cause.

There are other medical conditions which can induce anxiety and it would seem reasonable to consult your doc.

PDF file, below, for options--but you're going to have to deal with your doc, any case, to make the change.

Good luck with the new plan of attack and sorry about the verapamil, but we always reccommend that any change in medication be discussed with your doctor.

Hope all works bloody well for you,

B.
