Constant ringing in ears
Mar 17th, 2014 at 1:52pm

Hey everyone--question to all us lucky folks--I've been getting clusters for over 25 years so I consider myself a vet.
I was in remission for the last 4 years and got crushed again 2 months ago (back with horrible vengeance). I reached the apex about 3 weeks ago and have a headache maybe twice a week (minor kip scale 3 max) but am still in cycle.
My question is does anyone have constant ringing in both ears? Of all my years dealing with this wonderful affliction, I don't recall ever having a constant ringing in the ears. Believe me, I'm not bitching (would rather have to deal with this than hitting the kip scale at 10's for weeks).
Just curious.

Such noises ("tinnitus") are likely to be a sign of your aging. (Have never heard of it being linked to Cluster.)

Another common source is explosure to loud nose for some time (music, machines, etc.) A number of medicines will lead to tinnitus. Probably, the most common source is as a sign of early hearing loss due to normal aging.

If you haven't had a hearing test, suggest you get one and save the results, getting a new test every few years, so that you can see which pattern of change occurs. Not unusual for hearing loss and loudness of the tinnitus increaae in parallel.

I've had it for over 10 yrs, but I credit high doses of Lithium, which we tried for the CH.  I've been off the Lithium for 10 yrs, but the tinnitus has stayed.

I also have noticed the ringing that didn't seem to accompany my previous bouts.

I will state that I had the ringing in one ear about a week prior to my cycle start due to an ear infection that my 22 month old daughter shared with me.  That was cleared up with antibiotics.

Now during the HA hits I really notice the ringing in both ears not just the side that had the infection.

I haven't done anything to warrant this due to loud noises, flying, concerts, etc.

I only hope it goes away with this bout!

Ever since my CH's began, my CH would start with tinnitus in both ears.  The headache would then follow within minutes.  After aborting the CH, the tinnitus would remain and fade out last.  Now that I'm pain free with medication, I still get "clusters" of tinnitus one or two times a day sans the pain.  I've got it right now as I type this.  I believe this is one of those things we can all differ on.  I don't necessarily believe it's a part or symptom of CH, but maybe the tinnitus some of us already have would aggravate or trigger our CH?

Are you taking asprin or tylanol?  My husband does for arthiritis in high doses.  His ears started ringing a couple of years ago.  Now it has gotten to wear it keeps him awake and interfers with hearing.  The dr scheduled him to see a ENT dr.  They did an ear test based on the fact of the ringing and exposure to rock music, hunting, field artilliaryman, air pressure paint cars, etc. etc.  He does have some hearing loss and high levels like a womans voice would be.  Not enough to justify hearing aids.  Good news.  They want him to follow up every year for hearing test and update on status of ringing in ears.

I would recomend you see a ENT dr.  Could be something might be nothing.  Good luck.
