CLUSTERHEADACHES + STEROIDS = AVASCULAR NECROSIS
Apr 16th, 2014 at 8:17am

I have been a "Clusterhead" for the last 19 years. I am now 34 and I had been diagnosed only when I was around 20 years old. Since then I had been given steroids (prednisone) as part of the treatment to help lessen the frequency and intensity of these headaches. Believe me, I know the degree of pain we are all suffering from and others that are lucky enough to have escaped such torture will never know what we go through even when they are standing there watching us...even though it is all they can do.  I did manage to skip 1 or 2 years here and there. I gave up smoking and alcohol for 2 years and I still had Cluster headaches during that time so for me I think smoking is not causing it. Alcohol I know does increase the attacks drastically during the cluster period. Unfortunately, my prolonged use of Prednisone has resulted me having Total Hip Replacements of both my hips cos of Avascular Necrosis (AVN) which is caused by the over use of steroids. It is difficult to have such operations at the age at 34 where my first replacement was done in 2011 and second one was in 2013. So a word of advice, please watch your intake of steroids and also have regular x-rays done (preferably yearly) of your hip and knee joints... Last night I had the worst CH in my history of having them.  Very violent and I have scars on the right side of my face from scratching myself unknowingly. My problem I am faced with now is that I cannot crouch like I used to when I used to get them before the replacements. It is that more difficult now.  I tried Imigran self-injections and oxygen and it didn't help a bit. I just wanted any other sort of advice or if anyone knows anything else that could help me. I have suicidal thoughts that I cannot help. I am currently on: Isoptin, Migril, Camcolit and Epillim. This season is my worst as compared to the rest...I really don't know how much more of this I can take... I really don't know...It is ruining my life...

I'm deeply sorry!

Sadly, the issue is not the Pred. but whoever was prescribing it in a manner quite outside the recommended protocol for treating Cluster is the culprit.

The standard use is: about 60mg/day; reducing 10mg about every other day to zero. At the same time, starting one of the meds used to reduce/stop attacks. So your main protection becomes any one of several drugs which are safe for long term use.

Based on what you wrote, strikes me that you have reason to  consult an attorney about malpractice.
