Cluster Headaches and Cardiac Problems

Is there a correlation or relationship between CH's and heart issues? I see on this message board people mentioning going in for heart problems and arrhythmias etc.. Also the D3 regimen is very heart healthy. Following this pattern can exercise, weight loss, and healthy diet help prevent CH's?

The most common link seen between CH and heart issues is a side effect of verapamil where the PR interval on an ECG is modified. Normally in this case coming off the verapamil results in changes being reversed. This is why people should have ECGs when on verapamil.

Another link is in the use of vasoconstrictors is another issue since this is one of the effects of triptans and the reason why they are limited for the frequency of use plus exclusions for people with heart issues.

There will also be people with heart issues where there is no connection with CH, just as there will be people with all the normal medical issues like asthma, arthritis, cancer and more...

Some people find that exercise can help abort a CH whilst for others it can trigger them.

In short, no. Exercise is an abort for some and for others it's a sure trigger. Diet can help if you know your food triggers (alcohol is nearly universal but not entirely so) but dropping your blood sugar or whatever can cause CHs to break out, too. Weight loss can be a good thing in general but a lot of our preventative meds cause weight gain. It would seem CHs are caused by a nasty little beastie who likes to flip a switch in our hypothalamus just to see us squirm. Preventatives are something we chase but abortives tend to be where we live. blessings. lance
