Building a water feature in the flower bed.
Jun 7th, 2014 at 2:08am

As the subject says, I'm building a water feature in my flower bed. It will be a concrete and rock pond. In the past I had a deer chaser fountain that worked well for several years. If you don't know what that is, look up deer chaser fountain on YouTube. Watch the video by ChefDiablo......that was my old one. The pond will be considerably larger this time and am thinking of adding a waterfall. Just wanted everyone's thought in this. Oh also, do you guys think it should have open exposed water or rocks concealing the water. I am leaning towards both. I want it to have a somewhat Japanese design, but that can get a little costly. Right now I have plenty of Rock and Bamboo. Tomorrow, I plan to get the pump(s), tubing, and concrete. The pond dimensions are about 4 feet by 6-7 feet and less than a foot deep. I don't plan to have aquatic wildlife in it, but who knows.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this before I begin. I don't plan to finish until Sunday, but tomorrow, the base of the pond needs to be completed(including plumbing). I will take pics an post my progress. I am not a professional landscaper so please don't expect anything spectacular.....LoL. Please look up my video on YouTube of my old deer chaser fountain to get an idea of the look that I'm after.

Oh, I forgot to say that I will be making spaces in the pond to add a future fog/smoke machine and possibly ambient lighting. Really I'm building this for my son because he just loves the fountain and the pond attracts frogs. (Which he loves to play with) I only plan on spending an extra 30 bucks in the pond because I'm having to rebuild the flower bed.

A water feature that big can easily play host to the plants that support the breeding cycles of your local butterflies, dragonflies and the like, many of which may be threatened species due to various man-made problems.

This will also keep it interesting for the billy lid who likes his frogs.

In all my years of gardening, I've never grown a flower so lovely as the one that spreads its wings and flies away.

Hmmmmm......perhaps you're right about the size of the pond. Maybe I should scale it down just a bit. I want it to be a focal point, not an abomination of my flower garden. I just have a lot of rock and need to use it.

Never an abomination, Tim. Make it bigger! A rock pool and fountain surrounded by flowers is a truly wonderful thing.

It can be an entire ecosystem supporting the plants, the frogs, the birds and bees, bugs and butterflies, and a beaut way for your curtain crawler to grow up with a sense of nature.

I've seen people tire of the work involved in owning a pool so they've turned it into an outdoor aquarium with sand and rocks, plants and mosses, fish and turtles, bowers for beer drinking and nesting boxes for birds. Maintenance-free, a tiny little wonderland and the greatest adventure for little people.

Will you send us pictures as you go along? A well-loved garden is a thing of beauty and a joy for all.

Didn't get to the construction today. I did manage to get the hardware for it. Will send pictures from beginning to completion and perhaps a walk-through video at the end that I will post on YouTube. I agreed to help an elderly neighbor tomorrow, so I may not actually complete my project. I have decided to build a waterfall and fountain. The dimensions will most likely be 5foot by 3 foot and varying depths but about 9inches deep at the deepest part(s). Still unsure of the plant life that will surround it. This project could grow but is limited by materials. Other than more concrete and cheap plants and mulch, I will not be investing anymore money into it.

Digging the pond. Had to break up a pre existing retainer wall.
