illness after cluster ends
Jul 10th, 2014 at 7:07pm

My son has CH's most days.  But I have noticed that the few times that he has had a CH-less set of days,  2-3 days into this CH-less set he becomes ill with some infection--stomach virus, shoulder infection, sore throat, etc.  Has anyone else noticed a similar situation?  The pattern with him is that as soon as his CH's stop, he gets sick with something else.  He doesn't have the CH's during these other illnesses.  Is anyone else having this sort of experience?  I am trying to research this to see if I can find some sort of cause or link to the cause.  Thanks!

Has your son been diagnosed with cluster headaches by a qualified doctor, hopefully a neurologist with experience and training in headaches? Going from headaches to illness to headaches to illness, repeat, doesn't sound to me like cluster headache symptoms. Possible something else going on?

Yes, he has been diagnosed by a neurologist.  He doesn't always get sick when he isn't having CH's.  I just thought that maybe the "signal" that his brain gets was something like, "You're coming down with something."  And maybe that signal was what caused the CH to stop for a few days.

Perhaps he's having a reaction to the CH meds. What does he take?

Could be his imune system is low, maybe try some vitamin
C tabs, and a daily multi vitamin.

Or it could be unrelated. Not everything is directly linked to CH.

9 years into my headaches and I'm still learning the oddities of it, so I can't give much help with the a possible connection between the two. What I am experienced in is not getting much sleep. If he is not resting well along with having headaches that are stressing him, his immune system COULD be suffering from the combination. Just a thought.

Sconley,

The non-specific description of your son's illness are not much help.  Does your son have a temperature during these bouts of illness? Nausea? Any visual distortions? Has he seen his PCP to have any of these illness diagnosed and treated?

Regarding his CH diagnosis...  What did the neurologist prescribe as an abortive?  What did he prescribe as a preventative?

Suggest you tell your son to see his PCP and ask for lab tests of his serum 25(OH)D, vitamin B12 and magnesium.  Make sure he gets the actual 25(OH)D serum concentration and not the diagnostic lab's or his PCP's assessment of "normal."

You son is likely vitamin D3 and magnesium deficient.  Both deficiencies can and will increase the frequency, severity and duration of his cluster headaches.

Take care and please keep us posted.

V/R, Batch

You love lots of things if you live around them. But there isn't any woman and there isn't any horse, that’s as lovely as a great airplane. If it's a beautiful fighter, your heart will be ever there
