Im new help me
Dec 19th, 2014 at 9:31pm

I have suffering with these CH for 3 years now. As of late the pain has been unbearable. Earlier this year my PCP prescribed me Tramadol. Honestly it works great while I'm taking it. But two or three days after I run out they come back like they never left. I've been given furiocet, imetrex and all the other standard ones that they give. All though the Tramadol works, it just became a controlled substance in August. Therefore, leaving me concerned with possible dependence. Is there anything someone can tell me to help prevent these headaches. I really dont get remission periods. The only remission I get is when I'm taking Tramadol.

Hi Daron and welcome

Are you working with a headache specialist as GPs and even most neurologists just don't have the experience or training to properly deal with CHs. This really shows in the medication that you've got as furiocet is useful for tension headaches and tramadol is not a good idea for CH as it takes too long to be absorbed into your bloodstream, it won't really touch the pain, it'll give you rebound CHs and there are all the problems of dependence (the same goes for any of the narcotic pain killers).

With the imitrex, were you given tablets (which are useless as they take too long to be absorbed) or the more effective nasal spray or injections?

Have you got any preventives, something like verapamil, lithium or topomax? These can cut down how many CHs you get?

Have you tried oxygen to abort your CHs? You need a high flow rate (15lpm+) and a non-rebreather mask. I use 25lpm and that can kill off one of my CHs in under 5 minutes. Read up about oxygen at - Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.

And who gave the CH diagnosis? It is not easy to diagnose accurately as part of the diagnosis it to rule out all other causes which is best done by a headache specialist.

And where are you in the world? There is likely to be someone local who can suggest a good headache specialist to see.

Keep reading and you'll soon know more than any GP about CH, then ask any question you can think of...
