I was so fortunate to find this site.  First, a brief introduction.
I've been suffering from CHs since the age of 13.  Up until 3 years ago I'd average around 6 CH's a year.  For the past 3 years it's been 3 a week.  I don't have to explain the pain...we all know.  I've been to the emergency room on 6 different occasions because of these headaches.  At times it seems death would be a better alternative.
I've been on all sorts of meds but it wasn't until I was perusing this site that I learned of Butterbur.  This little plant extract has literally been life-altering for me.  I've been taking it for 6 weeks now.  I went from 3 CH a week to 1 in the past 6 weeks.  I hope it continues to work for me.  I know everybody's different...but if you haven't tried it it might be worthwhile.  Just do the homework.
Again, so happy I stumbled on this site.  Always good to converse with fellow sufferers.

A first experience of Cluster starting in your 40s is not common. This suggests the absolute need for a solid diagnostic work-up before it's possible to start treatment.

It's troublesome to find a doc with knowledge/skills in treating complex headche disorders--but start looking.

LOCATING HEADACHE SPECIALIST

1. Yellow Pages phone book: look for "Headache Clinics" in the M.D. section and look under "neurologist" where some docs will list speciality areas of practice.

2.  Call your hospital/medical center. They often have an office to assist in finding a physician. You may have to ask for the social worker/patient advocate.

They will send a list of M.D.s for your state.I suggest using this source for several reasons: first, we have read several messages from people who, even seeing neurologists, are unhappy with the quality of care and ATTITUDES they have encountered; second, the clinical director of the Jefferson (Philadelphia) Headache Clinic said, in late 1999, that upwards of 40%+ of U.S. doctors have poor training in treating headache and/or hold attitudes about headache ("hysterical female disorder") which block them from sympathetic and effective work with the patient; third, it's necessary to find a doctor who has experience, skill, and a set of attitudes which give hope of success. This is the best method I know of to find such a physician.
