possible cluster headache?
Dec 8th, 2017 at 7:59am

Hi I'm new here. I'm not even sure I have cluster headaches, because one thing doesn't match and that is the severity of the pain.
It all started 2 years ago, I got a cold was all bunged up and felt awful and then I got a headache, just one spot on my left temple area, it felt like I was being stabbed in my brain, and sometimes the pain felt like it was behind my eye. The pain wasn't like any headache I had before, it came and went every day multiple times for no reason. I might get 5 mins of stabbing pain (about a 7/10) then it would ease off to a 5/10 then either disappear for a while or return to a stabbing pain. Day or night it didn't matter. It lasted for around 4 months and then just disappeared.  I did see the GP many times and I was diagnosed as having a migraine.

Fast forward to last week. I have only had 'normal' type headaches the last 2 years. Then last week I started with a cold, and the pain started again, I just put it down to the congestion, but now a week later the odd headache is still there, pain is up and down, up and down and when I googled to see what kind of headache this was cluster headache fits all of the symptoms except for the severity of the pain. I have never had 10/10 pain. Last time I would say 8/10 was the most severe pain and this time so far a 7/10. Don't get me wrong it is agony, but not the worst pain I can imagine (being hit by a car and breaking multiple bones was a 10/10 and I passed out from the pain, and it isn't as bad as that).

So basically I am wondering what kind of headache this is, could it be a cluster headache, or is it a migraine like the doctor said last time. Because the headache disappeared last time, and I had never had it before I didn't follow up the appointment, or get any further investigation, I just thought that was a one off. I've made an appointment to see my GP on Monday.

Thanks for reading.

Hi and welcome

It is impossible for us to diagnose headaches, especially CH, since it needs confirmation of the symptoms (the easy bit) and then ruling out all other possible causes (which is the really hard bit).

We recommend that for headaches like you're experiencing that you see a headache specialist as GPs, even more neurologists don't have the skills or experience to diagnose complex headaches.

Another complication is that for some people it can take weeks, months or even longer for the full classical CH symptoms to fully emerge.

I'd start keeping a headache diary which you can use to track your headaches with date / time / symptoms / pain level / anything else which may be applicable. This can help with the diagnosis.

Hope you get on top of your headaches soon and keep us updated. We've all been through the process you're going through now.
