Chronic CH - Diagnostic Criteria Changed
Nov 2nd, 2019 at 2:39am

The IHS (International Headache Society) has updated their diagnostic criteria. Previously this was where there were CHs which had lasted for at least one year with a remission period of less than one month. This has now been changed to where the remission period(s) are less than three months.

So for example the following will class chronic:
  • CH for 11 months, gap of a month
  • CH for 6 months, gap of 3 months, CH for 3 months
  • CH for 3 months, gap of 2 months, CH for a month, gap of 3 months, CH for 3 months

This will mean that a lot more people will now be classifies as being chronic CH as opposed to episodic CH.

The chronic CH definition criteria can be found at - Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Quote:
A) Attacks fulfilling criteria for 3.1 Cluster headache, and criterion B below
B) Occurring without a remission period, or with remissions lasting <3 months, for at least 1 year.

As to what it means, well it is just a label. A CH is a CH no matter if someone is episodic or chronic.

Mike,

Many thanks for that information.

It might make a difference here in Ireland, as it is possible to get a State Invalidity Pension for Chronic sufferers who are unable to work due to the severity of their condition.

It may be the same in the UK and other countries, I don’t  know, but it could be worth checking for some.

Thanks again.

Peter.
