I'm sitting here right now with exactly what everyone else on this board describes. My theory is that at least for me it is extremely hormonally related because: 1) I first experienced these during puberty; 2) then when I went on birth control pills I experienced these like clockwork on the first day of my period so I stopped taking birth control pills and 3) didn't have this again for about 15-20 years until recently now at the age of 47 when I'm probably pre-menopausal (also, the episodes seem to happen now either when I'm ovulating or close to when I start my period). I consulted my OB-GYN and put forth this theory to him but he discounted it. Big surprise, huh? You can't tell me it's not related!
