Sounds like you had a phlebitis, or infection of some of your veins. This is not a common side effect of verapamil. What caused it? I don't know. Often we never find out.
A blood clot to the leg can also cause edema like you are describing (also not a side effect of verapamil), and it sounds like you already have a history of bad veins/arteries. Calcium channel blockers can actually be beneficial in preventing additional attacks.
Talk with your doc, but I wouldn't blame this one on the verapamil.
